Living in a Net Zero Ready Home …..
Back in 2018, we secured a piece of the BC property pie, in the sought-after neighborhood in Pemberton BC.
The lot has stunning views and plenty of solar access.
During the pre-construction phase we worked closely with SAS Architecture, Mountain Resort Engineering and energy modeling by in order to strive for Step 5 of the BC step code (better known as Net Zero Ready).
This 4000 sqft sloping mountainside lot, with wedge shaped front lot line on the north aspect provided a challenge and we had to get creative.
As the design was moving along, I had more questions than answers. I decided to up my game and complete the Passive House Tradesperson course at BCIT with to help gain better understanding of the high performance building world. This proved to be invaluable.
We broke ground in the fall of 2019, moved into the suite New Year’s Eve 2020 and then into the main house May 2021.
After over 1 year of living in the home, I’ve decided to share the tea of what it’s really like to live in a net zero ready home, from the unique perspective of being the Builder/Customer and now a self-confessed energy nerd. More to come!

Happy Earth Day 🌎 although houses are generally responsible for 40% of our carbon emissions across Canada. In Pemberton, the carbon emissions are more tied to fossil-fuel powered passenger and commercial vehicles at a whopping 83% and residential buildings and landfills the remaining 17 %. The choice is clear it can’t be business as usual. That’s why we chose our newest company car to be an EV.
