Before the walls go up, there's this.

Structural steel in place on a West Vancouver hillside. The frame is where every decision made in the engineer's drawings becomes physical, where tolerances either hold or don't.

Raw material. Precise placement. The foundation everything else depends on.

On a project like the Wedgewoods residence in Whistler, the architectural steel scope touches almost every room.

Structural steel. Exterior guardrails. Interior stairs. Slat wall. Custom chimney shroud. Stainless pool accents. Mechanical covers. Door thresholds. Jamb plates. Window sills. Custom bunk bed structure.

Working with BattersbyHowat Architects, Twin Peaks Engineering, and Creekworks Construction, our team coordinated from early design through final installation.

We can't wait to show final shots of this master piece project in Whistler. We began by installing the structural steel framework, laying the foundation for the home's expansive design. Now, we’re crafting and installing the aluminum knife-edge roof, a precise architectural feature that adds both strength and style. Next, we’ll build the staircase, blending function with striking design.

What is a knife-edge roof and why does it matter?

A knife-edge roof profile tapers the fascia to a sharp, thin line at the building's perimeter. The result is a roofline that reads as impossibly thin from the exterior, giving a large structure a sense of lightness it wouldn't otherwise have.

Achieving it in aluminum requires precise fabrication. The taper has to be consistent across the full run, the corners need to be mitered cleanly, and the installation has to account for the material's thermal expansion.

We're currently fabricating and installing the aluminum knife-edge roof on this Olson Kundig–designed Whistler residence. More to come.

Some structures are meant to disappear into their setting. This one is meant to be the reason you look up.

The Malahat SkyWalk on Vancouver Island, designed by Murdoch & Company, built by Kinsol Timber Systems. Wide Open Welding supplied approximately 850,000 pounds of steel for the project, including the iconic spiral staircase and over 500 linear feet of custom radius railings.

This project exemplifies the seamless integration of mass timber and steel components, showcasing our expertise in delivering complex, innovative structures that harmonize with their natural surroundings.

TEAM: Patkau Architects, Equilibrium Consulting, Alta Lake Lumber, Wide Open Welding.

Our scope on this 2011 Whistler residence included the structural steel framework for the upper levels, a 20-gauge galvanized roof deck, and a custom steel canopy — each component engineered with Equilibrium Consulting to perform in the site's demanding alpine conditions.

Wide Open Welding has been the structural and architectural steel fabricator on some of the most complex residential projects in the Sea-to-Sky corridor for over two decades. That track record is why architects and engineers call us before the project breaks ground.

If you're in early planning on a technically demanding build, we're worth talking to. Send us your drawings: [email protected] | 604-894-5027

On this Whistler custom residence, our scope extended from the structural frame to custom steel stairs, railings, the fireplace hearth, chimney cap, and mantle support structure. Each detail designed, fabricated, and installed by our team to the same standard as the staircase and structural work surrounding it.

When one fabricator carries the steel in a home, structural through to architectural finish, the details align. Nothing is an afterthought.

There's a difference between a building that sits on a site and one that belongs to it.

This Olson Kundig–designed Whistler residence stretches along the tree line, its horizontal form shaped by the slope and the views it's meant to frame. The structural steel follows that logic — wide spans, deliberate proportions.

Wide Open Welding handles the steel. The landscape does the rest.
