🛁➡️🚿 Same bathroom, same footprint, and a completely different room.

This family's bathroom had an aging tub/shower combo that was hard to get in and out of and took up more space than it gave back. We took the room right down to the studs, updated the plumbing, and built a walk-in shower in its place: marble-look subway tile floor to ceiling, a low-profile base, and a matte-black sliding glass door that keeps the whole room feeling open and bright.

🌱 Before a lawn ever gets rolled out, there's a lot of unglamorous work that has to happen first.

This new build got its final grade done — leveling and prepping the soil so the sod (staged and ready, just off to the side) lays flat, drains properly, and actually takes root instead of turning patchy by spring. It's easy to overlook, but rushing this step is exactly how homeowners end up with soggy low spots and a lawn that never sits right.

We treat the ground work outside a house with the same care as the finishes inside — a build isn't really finished until the yard around it works as well as the rooms do.

🪵 Not every project is a full reno — sometimes it's solving a problem you didn't know needed solving this well.

This firewood shelter was tucked right into the hillside under an existing deck, so it uses space that would otherwise just sit empty. A slanted roof sheds rain and snow, and it's stacked deep enough to get a household through a whole winter without needing a mid-January restock. Stained to match the deck above it, so it looks like it was always part of the house.

Custom builds like this are some of our favourite work — small footprint, big usefulness, and the kind of project that makes daily life a little easier once the weather turns.

Happy Labour Day! 🛠️

Today's a day off for a lot of people, but it felt like the right day to show the parts of a job that never make it into the "after" photos — a rebar grid laid out before a driveway pour, a shed framed up and sheathed before the siding goes on. No finished reveal, no perfect lighting. Just the groundwork that everything else depends on.

AF Construction has always been a family business, and that means every job gets the same care, whether it's the part homeowners will show off for years or the part that gets buried under concrete by next week. Today we're taking a minute to appreciate that kind of work — our crew's, and every tradesperson's out there doing it.

🐔 Not every job site comes with a view like this.

This custom coop and run was built to actually work for the birds and the owner — a covered roosting structure with three separate nesting bays, a long protected run for shade and shelter, and a fully enclosed extension so the flock can range further without worrying about predators. All of it framed up to hold its own against Okanagan winters, with a backdrop most of us would take a photo of even without the chickens in it.

Projects like this are a good reminder that "custom build" doesn't just mean kitchens and bathrooms. If you can dream it up — and it needs to be built solid — we're happy to take it on.

🚿 We showed you this bathroom back in May — here's a closer look at the details that make it work.

The walk-in shower features a rainfall head, a handheld wand, and tiled niches built right into the wall for a clean, clutter-free finish, all lit by soft recessed lighting. Around the corner, the double-sink quartz vanity is anchored by a full-width LED backlit mirror that doubles as the room's main light source in the evening.

Small touches like these are what turn a "new bathroom" into a room people actually enjoy using every day.

🎱 There's more to this games room than the pool table.

This is the same upper-floor hangout space we featured for Father's Day — but the pool table and ping pong are only half the story. Around the corner is a full wet bar with stone counters, a built-in fridge and dishwasher, and a dining nook that doubles as office space, all set against walls dressed in rock-and-roll memorabilia that give the room its personality.

It's a good example of what we love building: a space that doesn't have to pick one job. This one plays, pours, and gathers, all under one roof.

🌅 Some job sites come with a pretty incredible view.

This dock rebuild wraps up with fresh cedar decking laid in a clean banded pattern, replacing a worn, weathered structure at the water's edge. New joists, new boards, built to handle four seasons of BC weather and years of dock parties, fishing trips, and quiet mornings on the water. We caught it here right at dusk — and again a little later with the moon coming up over the treeline.

Docks take a beating from ice, water levels, and time, and a rebuild like this one is as much about the structure underneath as it is the boards on top. Good bones first, good looks second.

🪨 Some finishes you just can't buy off a shelf.

This guest bathroom reno centers on a custom vanity topped with a genuine petrified wood vessel sink — a one-of-a-kind piece that turns an everyday bathroom into something worth talking about. We paired it with a dark stone countertop, a matching wood-framed mirror, and warm dropped lighting to let the sink do the talking, then finished the room with a full tub/shower surround and slate-look tile flooring.

It's a good reminder that a renovation doesn't have to be huge to make a big impression — sometimes it's one standout material and the details built around it.

🔨 Some of our favourite work never gets its own "reveal" photo — it just quietly makes a room.

This built-in feature wall is a good example: floor-to-ceiling wood paneling, a recessed display niche, and a hidden storage cabinet built right into the design — all framed and hung before the finishing touches go on. It's the kind of detail that takes real planning to get square, level, and seamless against the walls around it.

Custom millwork and built-ins are some of the most satisfying work we do, because they're made for the exact space and the exact homeowner — no two are ever quite the same.
