To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow… you may have seen this quote from Audrey Hepburn on our trucks and maybe even our uniforms. It’s a fitting quote to bring attention to now as it is not only a good time to plant a new garden, but also to remind us to believe in better days ahead. Many people in Ottawa have been without power since Saturday; this inconvenience can be particularly tough for some people to deal with, so don’t forget to lend a hand to your neighbours if you can.

Today is World Bee Day! Celebrated on the 20th of May every year, World Bee Day is a perfect day to educate yourself on our little pollinating friends! The theme of this year is “Bee Engaged: Celebrating the Diversity of Bees and Beekeeping systems.”

We hope you all enjoy the long weekend! 🐝Bee seeing you!😉

The little flowers of Spring are beautiful but short lived sights. We hope you’ve all found a moment or two to appreciate the beauty of hyacinths, Scilla, and grape hyacinth, even while daffodils and tulips are getting most of the attention.

You won’t see us out on too many very rainy days; conditions for working outdoors can become dangerous when wet. So what do we do on these rainy days? There’s plenty to keep us busy! We clean and sharpen tools, wash the trucks, and sometimes fix things - like the wheelbarrow in these pictures!

At the end of our 2021 season, one of our older wheelbarrows finally had its handles break. Replacement handles are easy enough to acquire though, so there’s no need to throw out the rest of it!

So, how many landscapers does it take to fix a wheelbarrow? Just kidding; with older wheelbarrows with rusted hardware and damaged components, an extra set of hands makes repair much less excruciating! Teamwork is a beautiful thing, don’t you agree?

We’re looking forward to a great week, and we wish you all a great one as well!

There are so many beautiful flowers emerging in early Spring; Crocuses, Daffodils, Siberian Squill, Hyacinth… which one is your favourite?

We hope you’ve all had a great week and that you have an even better weekend!

Spring cleanups have begun! This is the time of year where we gather and remove from sites leftover Fall leaves, tree debris, and any garbage that may have been blown into gardens and lawns before getting buried in snow.

While there are reasons to leave the leaves be, it can be unsightly in some places and you may want them removed to enhance the appearance of your home. If you feel guilty about the disruption of spots where butterflies and bees may have been overwintering, there are things you can do to help their populations over the coming months, such as buying a bee or butterfly house for your garden (or making your own), and planting pollinator friendly plants.

Could your garden use a little sprucing up? We can help!

It’s officially been spring for exactly one week now, but the weather never seems unable to make up its mind in these early days of the season! We’ve had a few nice days and a few miserable ones! Hang tight, everyone! Soon the snow will be gone, leaf buds will burst open, spring flowers will emerge, and we’ll be able to look forward to warm, sunny days!

We hope you all had a lovely weekend!

Wildflower Wednesday! Today we’re looking at Globe Thistle (Echinops ritro)

Native to Southern and Eastern Europe and Western Asia, this “wild”plant is actually a prized ornamental plant that frequently escapes the boundaries of a garden to the point that it has become naturalized and can be found growing along fence lines, roadsides, and in waste areas.

The genus echinops comes from the Greek word echinos, meaning hedgehog; ops means appearance, so echinops basically means hedgehog-like appearance, referring to the blue prickly flower heads. Could this have been the inspiration for a certain famous blue video game mascot?

These plants are in bloom in summer and will attract butterflies. These plants make great dried and cut flowers; just watch out for for their prickly foliage!

Happy National Butterfly Day, also known as National Learn About Butterflies Day! This may only officially be an American national day, but butterflies are well loved in Canada as well, with the large (though declining) numbers of monarch butterflies being a favourite sight in summer.
