As Mental Health Month comes to a close, we are sharing some of the conversations and the connections we’ve strengthened together, and the impact these actions hold beyond the month of May.

This year’s theme surrounding connection and coming together reminds us that none of us have to face mental health challenges alone, and that sometimes it is the small actions that make some of the biggest positive impacts on others. The everyday moments, like checking in with one another, creating space for open dialogue, and embracing change together, are just as powerful in fostering a culture where everyone feels supported, valued, and connected.

As always, our Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is available for our team and their families should they require assistance, and offers free, confidential support with mental health, stress, family concerns, and other life challenges. Information needed to access this resource can be found on site job borads, in new hire packages, our EAP hard hat stickers, various mail outs and handouts, through your supervisor or Human Resources, and other organization communications.

We are excited to celebrate Gage Cote’s remarkable milestone of 15 years with Tomlinson.

Gage, one of our younger yet highly skilled loader operators, has made an incredible impact on everyone he has worked with. His knowledge and team spirit have proven invaluable to his crew members and the company as a whole.

Gage’s journey began with Greenbelt, where he quickly learned the ropes by absorbing knowledge from his peers. His eagerness to learn and grow allowed him to master his skills rapidly. Today, Gage is not only an expert loader operator but also a mentor, passing on his knowledge and experience to newer team members.
His colleagues know him for his good sense of humor and his ability to bring a positive energy to any situation. He is the kind of person people naturally gravitate towards, making him a likeable and essential part of our team.

We are delighted to congratulate Curtis Gibeault on reaching the significant milestone of 15 years of dedicated service with Tomlinson.

Curtis’s journey with us began in 2011 when he joined Graydex, alongside his father, Kevin Gibeault, just before the acquisition. From the very beginning, Curtis has demonstrated exceptional skill and dedication in his role as a deckman. Known for his meticulous nature, Curtis’s organizational skills and keen attention to detail have made him an invaluable member of our team. His commitment to excellence has been evident in every project he has been a part of.

Curtis has had the opportunity to work on many exciting projects over the years, but the ones at the Ottawa Airport hold a special place in his heart. His love for aeronautics made these projects particularly enjoyable, allowing him to combine his professional expertise with his personal passions.

We are honoured to recognize and celebrate James Bent for his 15 years of dedicated service with Tomlinson.

James joined Tomlinson through Gradex on April 9, 2012. His journey began with sewer and water projects, where he worked diligently until 2021. He then transitioned to the City Division before joining the Residential Division in April 2022. Throughout his time with us, James has been an integral part of several major projects, including Richardson Ridge Phase 4 (road building, lot preparation, and retaining walls), Bridlewood Phase 6, Greystone Village, and Pathways.

James is known for being a deep thinker and detail-oriented, qualities that have greatly contributed to the success of the projects he has been involved in. He is also a devoted family man with three children and is admired for his easy-going nature. James consistently does what is asked of him without complaint, embodying our core values of Growth, Driven, and Committed.

James, your hard work, dedication, and positive attitude have made a significant impact on our team and our projects. We are incredibly grateful for your contributions over the past 15 years and look forward to many more years of success together.

Community and feeling connected are vital to reduce stress and increase our mental wellbeing both at, and outside of our work environment. As we look at the importance of conversation and community in support of this year’s mental health month theme, we continue to share the significance of coming together to increase mental health awareness, and ensure we are promoting more positive days, together.

As we approach our annual Rock the Red employee and family event, we want to highlight that not only is this a great opportunity to enjoy an incredible weekend of music and fun, but is also a fantastic opportunity to build conversation and community with colleagues! By building community, we strengthen not only our workplace culture but also our individual well-being, creating a sense of belonging that supports us both professionally and personally. At a recent team gathering, we celebrated a significant milestone for two of our valued team members, Kyler Hammel and Vince Labelle, who reached their 15-year anniversary with Tomlinson.

Kyler began his career with Dufresne Piling Company (DCP) immediately after graduating from university, joining the company as an Estimator and Project Coordinator. Early in his career, he quickly became known as the go-to person in the office for IT-related challenges, demonstrating both technical curiosity and a talent for problem-solving alongside his estimating and coordination work.

In 2013, about two years into his career, Kyler took on a major opportunity - managing the Parliament Hill West Block Project. This complex, four-year assignment provided invaluable experience and tested his skills under demanding conditions. During this time, Kyler demonstrated professionalism, adaptability, and composure beyond what would be expected of someone so early in their career. Many will recall the security incident that occurred on Parliament Hill during that project. Fortunately, Kyler was unharmed, though confined to the site until the investigation concluded. In true Kyler fashion, this likely only added a few hours to what was already a full and dedicated workday.

Today at Tomlinson, Kyler serves as a Senior Estimator, recognized for his expertise in piling, shoring, deep building excavations, and site services. He continuously seeks to expand his knowledge and capabilities, exploring how software programs function, interact, and can be optimized. His ability to identify system limitations and devise creative workarounds reflects the same analytical mindset and persistence he’s shown throughout his career. Beyond his professional achievements, Kyler’s strength and determination have guided him through life’s challenges. He is a devoted husband and proud father to two young daughters, balancing his demanding career with unwavering commitment to his family.

Vinny's journey with us began 15 years ago on the piling crew at Kent and Gladstone. At that time, he could not speak a word of English. However, with determination and hard work, he not only overcame the language barrier but also excelled in his trade. Encouraged by his father, who was a welder with Dufresne, Vinny pursued his welding tickets. He labored while practicing his welding skills, eventually challenging and passing all his welding tickets in various positions.

Throughout his career, Vinny has welded on numerous job sites, working with crawler cranes and driving piles. His expertise and dedication did not go unnoticed, and he rose through the ranks to become a foreman. In this role, he has led teams in front of cranes and drills, always ready to step in and weld when needed. Vinny's story is a testament to his unwavering commitment, hard work, and growth. He embodies our core values of Growth, Driven, and Committed, consistently delivering the highest standards of work and building trusted relationships with his colleagues and customers.

We are honoured to celebrate both Vinny, affectionately known as “Vin Diesel,” and Kyler on their impressive 15 years of dedicated service with Tomlinson. Vinny, we’re incredibly proud of your achievements and grateful for your many contributions. Kyler, your expertise, curiosity, and problem-solving spirit continue to make a lasting impact - often leaving the rest of us smiling as we try to figure out what you’ve already mastered.

Recently, our team paired up with Caterpillar for our annual 3-day Tomlinson University operator-specific paving course. Not only does this training allow our team to get up close with CAT reps for an opportunity to further advance their equipment knowledge, but also allows them to perfect the intricacies of modern paving techniques. Having hands-on training in this capacity is just one way we continue to grow and develop our team, and ensures they have the tools in the toolbox to complete their work at the highest possible capacity.

This course ensures our team has consistent and advanced knowledge of their trade, and is also an opportunity for our crew to get together in one place to build camaraderie as they ramp into their season ahead!

Mental Health Month is about coming together, and conversations are where it starts. Feeling connected helps protect our mental health by reducing stress and reminding us we’re not alone. In the workplace, simple peer to peer conversations can make a real difference by creating trust, understanding, and a sense of belonging.

• Listen with empathy, without trying to solve or fix
