⚡ Ice Storm Preparation Checklist

With freezing rain expected in Eastern Ontario over the next few days, power outages are possible. It’s always best to be prepared ahead of time to keep your family safe and comfortable.

⚠️ Generator Safety Reminders

✔ Never run generators in garages or near doors or windows
✔ Place generators at least 20 feet away from your home
✔ Always point exhaust away from the house
✔ Never plug a generator into a wall outlet (back feeding is dangerous)
✔ Only use heavy-duty extension cords directly to appliances unless your home has a generator inlet with an interlock or transfer switch installed

🏠 Power Outage Tips

• Charge phones and flashlights before the storm
• Have extra blankets ready
• Keep fridge and freezer doors closed as much as possible
• Keep a portable charger available for phones

⛽ Fuel Preparation

• Keep 30–40 litres of fresh gasoline stored safely
• Use approved fuel containers only
• Store fuel in a safe, ventilated area away from your home

🚫 Common Generator Mistakes Electricians See During Outages

❌ Refueling a generator while it is still hot
❌ Using thin or undersized extension cords
❌ Running generators indoors or inside garages
❌ Back feeding power through outlets

🧰 Emergency Preparedness Checklist

It is important to be prepared for these situations so we have put together a list of items you should have on hand in case of an emergency:

• Flashlight (windup or battery operated)
• Radio (windup or battery operated)
• Extra batteries
• Portable cell phone charger
• Water (2 litres per person per day)
• Non-perishable canned or dried food
• Manual can opener
• Blankets
• Candles and matches or lighters
• First aid kit and any prescriptions / medical items
• List of emergency numbers
• Cash
• Gasoline
