Heading out of town for the weekend? It’s good practice to shut off the water to your house if you’re going to be away ✅ This helps minimize the risk of damage to your home in the event of a burst pipe or flood while you’re away 💦 ☔️

Depending on the age of your home, you either have one or two shut-off valves at your water meter.
💧Your water meter is likely located along the front wall of your home (or possibly along the side if you share a lane/driveway with a neighbour).
💧If you have two shut-off valves, close the valve AFTER the water meter. If you’re not sure which way water is flowing, take a look at your water meter. There should be an arrow showing the direction of flow.

Does your main shut off valve make you nervous, or leak when you turn it? Consider installing a quarter-turn ball valve (see valve above the water meter in the photo). These valves are reliable and easy to use 👍

As more businesses prepare to reopen on Friday, we want to encourage anyone who is getting ready to reopen to take a few minutes to check their plumbing fixtures and make sure you don’t have any flooding on opening day/weekend!

Toilet tank-to-bowl gaskets, sink drain assemblies, urinal & toilet flush valves, and bathtub shoe gaskets & overflow gaskets are all examples of plumbing fixtures that use rubber gaskets to seal water. When these gaskets see consistent use, the rubber stays moist and continues to seal water. When it dries out after not being used for extended periods of time (I.e: Covid quarantine) the rubber can dry out and crack, allowing water to escape your fixtures and cause flooding.

These are stressful times. Take a few minutes now to check your plumbing fixtures before you reopen and help alleviate some stress on opening day.

This cracked stack made a bit of a mess in a high-rise apartment building in Ottawa.

When we opened the walls and exposed the leak, we found 4 different types of piping on the drain: cast iron, copper, ABS, and XFR. We removed the cracked copper and old rotted cast iron, removed a small section of ABS (by Ontario plumbing code, ABS pipe is not permitted in high rise buildings), and renewed it all in XFR.

Working on stacks in apartment buildings can be stressful. Even when given notice not to, people sometimes forget and put significant amounts of waste water down their drains. Wherever possible, we try to prefabricate the new section of stack in order to minimize the amount of time where the stack is open.

We’ve had lots of calls lately to repair outside hose bibs 💦
💧 When you turn on your outside hose bib for the first time this season, be sure to check for leaks in your basement right after you turn the water on!
💧If the valve wasn’t properly winterized or if a hose was left on when the temperature dropped below freezing, pipes may have frozen and split and could be actively flooding in your basement.
💧 If you are able to see where the pipe enters your house, take a quick look. If you notice a bulge like this, don’t open the valve - it has frozen and split, and will flood your basement once you open the valve outside.

A logo is more than just images and text. It’s a story. Our logo is an homage to the evolution of our family’s business.

Waghorn’s Plumbing is run by the Waghorn family, who have been providing plumbing service to the Ottawa area since Cecil Waghorn started his plumbing career over 65 years ago. Cecil worked as a plumber for several years before starting his own company, W&W Plumbing & Heating. Our logo, except in blue coveralls instead of red, was at one time the logo for W&W.

In the 1980’s, Cecil’s son, Larry, came into the plumbing trade and became a Master Plumber. Upon completion of his apprenticeship, Larry was recruited by Algonquin College and taught night school for 5 years while continuing to work full time for W&W Plumbing & Heating. Larry eventually started his own company, Waghorn’s Plumbing, while continuing to work with his father, Cecil, at W&W Plumbing & Heating.

In 2019, Cecil retired, officially closing W&W Plumbing & Heating.

Today, Larry Waghorn runs Waghorn’s Plumbing with his team of dedicated and knowledgeable staff, including his two children (Matt and Kylie) and Brad Kirton, who have all learned the trade from Larry and Cecil.

The Waghorn’s Plumbing team is here to serve your residential and commercial plumbing needs. We’ve built our family business on honesty, care, and trust. Many of our customers have become life-long friend.
