It is essential that we acknowledge zoning minimum requirements for what they truly represent: discrimination against low-income individuals and minorities. Requirements such as acreage, road frontage, square footage, and notably 'Wetlands' in my situation, which exclusively impact me despite being situated on the highest ground and not affecting neighboring properties as they contuine to develop ,cut and burn a provincially significant wetland not the buffer, serves as a means to prevent 'undesirable' individuals from moving into the neighborhood and occupying smaller homes or homes on wheels. In a country grappling with a severe housing shortage, exorbitant home prices, and a lack of available new homes, it is crucial that PNB initiate discussions about how zoning laws are exacerbating rather than alleviating issues. Zoning laws operate at local levels of government, and local officials must be held accountable as homelessness rates escalate and numerous individuals are forced to reside in cars and tents despite maintaining full-time employment. I have previously brought these concerns to the attention of my MLA, Kris Austin, who represented the People's Alliance Party and later the Conservative Party. Furthermore, during his tenure as Minister of Public Safety three years ago, he disregarded the NB Power safety issue, which took 17 months to resolve and was only addressed after The Daily News Group publicized the matter. Additionally, he has neglected environmental concerns that have adversely affected my personal and business life while I endeavored to provide affordable housing options for less desirable populations. Mr. Austin, as my MLA for this area, I am publicly sharing these concerns and urging you to implement changes that should have been addressed three years ago. If not, I will await my opportunity to present my case to the crown in court. Three years and still counting the days. Time for change, time for fairness and accountability.. PLEASE SHARE.

To my fellow tiny house dwellers and dreamers-

For years I have worked as a legal parking advocate to help advance parking for tiny houses on wheels. In 2018, my husband and I built our tiny and spent two years searching for legal parking. We legalized our tiny with the wheels on, on our own land - a hard fought battle to say the least.

I have followed closely the creation of standards and codes for the past 5 years, as I am an active member of the ASTM global standards currently being created, but what is occurring with the ICC and THIA venture now threatens to disable positive movement for this industry and tiny houses on wheels as a whole.

A SRU (small residential unit) is 1200 sq ft or less constructed as a permanent residence, while a tiny house on wheels falls under 400 square ft and contains a chassis which has been completely removed from the documentation, in an attempt to lump it under codified ICC jargon that is not recognized and will not provide it the proper and necessary ability to stand on its own as a viable and efficient type of housing.

Multiple violations have occurred during this process including: overreach in dominating a standard, violation of ANSI requirements, bullying, failure to call for comments, stacked voting committee members, lack of Pins notifications to stakeholders, domination of a single interest party, which have all led to this current situation.

While the forward movement of the tiny house on wheels popularity grows, so must the standards and codes that help us live legally - however, pushing us back as a movement in this fashion will hinder affordable housing options, hurt small builders and DIY builders, and create confusion surrounding already existing regulations.

We have always been a movement for simplicity, passion for living with freedom, flexibility, and move-ability.

Now it’s time to MOVE.

It’s time to push back against unfair and oppressive regulations as we are actively witnessing the corporate take over of tiny houses on wheels right now.

It’s time to stand together and work for change - your signature counts, your voice counts, and your active participation will protect the interests of small builders, DIYers so this industry is not compromised by corporate interests, regulations, expensive factory certifications, and more barriers to entry.

Please consider signing and sharing this important information and reading the full petition as there are multiple ways to help.

Go tiny - live free!

It is regrettable but needed! We must lower the bar for
homeownership, but enabling individuals to escape rental costs and initiate equity and savings accumulation, even in a modest dwelling, constitutes progress.

Mike Roy’s Carpentry

Locally owned and operated by Mike Roy in Oromocto, NB since 1992. Mike Roy's Carpentry is expanding the shop to accommodate building on/off grid tiny homes, portable cottages, portable granny suites, and custom log furniture.

Mission Statement: We work with you, the customer, one on one to get your custom build done right. No generic cookie-cutter plans here.

With living costs continuing to rise, it is time to consider downsizing and free oneself from the consumer driven chaos. Tiny homes allow us to go back to the basics, with the luxury of modern 21st century conveniences. It is very simple, just downsize and rid yourself of the clutter you’ve accumulated over the years. With a tiny home or cottage, there is significant less square footage to maintain and clean as well. Our builds are actually four season ready with excellent spray foam insulation, and ultra high efficiency.

For people young and old, this could be your starter home, or final home! If you have elderly family that needs to be close to you, and not in a nursing home, we can build a specialized portable granny suite. This can be a standalone unit, or attach to your existing house via a breezeway. They can have their own dwelling and everyone maintains their privacy. This is a similar idea to the portable classrooms on many schools around the province. When living arrangements change, your investment can be removed and sold.
