Tips for pruning lilacs. Do your pruning when the lilac blooms are done flowering. You have a good three week period to do your pruning after it’s done. Remove 1/3 of the old wood. Look for broken, crossing and rubbing branches. Let some of the new young fresh suckers grow up to help rejuvenate the shrub. Thin out center to allow light in. Prune off old spent blooms and trim height if needed. Do not prune shrubs if younger than 3 years planted.
