π± Keeping Your Lawn Healthy During Dry Conditions π±
With the recent lack of rainfall, many lawns are starting to show signs of stress. Here are a few tips to help keep your grass healthy until more rain arrives:
β
Water Deeply, Not Daily
Aim for 1β1.5 inches of water per week, including rainfall. Water early in the morning to reduce evaporation and allow moisture to reach the root zone.
β
Raise Your Mowing Height
Longer grass blades provide shade for the soil, helping retain moisture and encouraging deeper root growth. Avoid cutting more than 1/3 of the grass height at a time.
β
Leave Grass Clippings
Mulching clippings back into the lawn helps return nutrients and moisture to the soil.
β
Limit Traffic on Stressed Areas
Dry grass is more vulnerable to damage. Try to avoid excessive foot traffic on brown or dormant sections of your lawn.
β
Hold Off on Fertilizing
Applying fertilizer during drought conditions can put additional stress on your lawn. Wait until cooler temperatures and adequate moisture return.
β
Don't Panic Over Brown Grass
Many lawns will naturally go dormant during extended dry periods. Dormant grass is often protecting itself and can recover when regular rainfall returns.
