Musty odours

We purchased a home that we were very excited about; however, one of our initial concerns was that there was a strong and distinct musty odour throughout the entire home. This was due to the fact that the former owner had moved out the previous November and there had been very

little air flow in the home for a seven-month period.

The pervasiveness of the odour started to wear on the both of us, and began to taint our enjoyment of our new home. Everything changed when we had Premier One Products, Inc. install a germicidal UVC unit and HEPA air filter.

By the very night of the installation, we noticed that the smell was gone. Now that we have had the unit for a month or so, we have almost forgotten that pervasive musty odour. We are grateful that the house smells fresh and take satisfaction that we are now breathing clean, healthy air.

What do you need to purify the air in your home or office?

You need an air purifier that will able to deal with common household air pollutants as well as particulate matter from haze.

For that, you would need an air purifier that uses HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filters.

In order for a filter to get ISO certification as a HEPA filter, it must need filter out 99.95% of particles of 0.3μm diameter. This means the air filter must be able to clean out particles as small as a virus (0.02-0.3 μm).

You need to choose one from a reputable manufacturer that is able to clean the air for the room it is in. Basically, a bigger room needs a larger unit to effectively filter the air in a reasonable amount of time.

If you don't have that many rooms in your house, you might only need to have one device that you move from room to room.

Or opt for a whole house or premise solution.

What’s the best type of air purifier for asthma?

There are many asthma triggers and the key is to get rid of them. The triggers are harmful airborne particles you can’t see.

A medical grade HEPA filter (MERV 17) is the best way to remove asthma triggers from your indoor air but the medical grade HEPA filter (MERV 17) must be supported with a fan that will move enough indoor air through the filter to achieve at least 3 to 4 air changes per hour.

Premium air purifiers use an activated carbon pre-filter to trap large airborne particles like large dust, pollen, pet hair, or pet dander. When a pre-filter is used it protects the medical grade HEPA filter from being clogged and extends the life of the HEPA filter.

Noise level is important. The more powerful the motor the lower the noise level.

All medical grade HEPA air purifiers produce a white noise. The noise level is related to the quality of the motor and the resistance of the filter.

IT IS AMAZING! I don’t wake up with matted eyes in the morning and the dog smell is gone! I even had room deodorizers on the main level where the dog spent most of his time and you can’t even smell those now.

What’s in the air we breathe at home?
Our indoor air is made up of gases and particles. Gases are the smallest and most challenging to remove. Odours are gases. Chemicals are gases. Gases are too small for HEPA filters – the gases pass right through.
The solution is an activated carbon filter that has many cracks and crevices that allow it to absorb gases. The best carbon filters use granular activated carbon. Granular (pellet form) carbon works well in the removal of things like to***co smoke and odours. However, not all activated carbon filters are created equal – your filter must have at least 3 pounds of carbon to be effective.

Feeling the spring sniffles? Asthma being constantly triggered? - Even if you have a HEPA filter at your home/work? Here's why:
Not all HEPA filters are created equal. A HEPA filter captures particles as they pass through the filter. Think of it as woven fibres like in our clothes. But a much tighter weave.
HEPA stands for High-Efficiency Particulate Air - it is a high-efficiency filter that traps particulates in the air.
The performance of HEPA filters varies a lot – it depends on the quality of the fibre material used in fabrication, the amount of filter media and the tightness of the weave.
The HEPA filters MERV rating is what you look for. If it's not MERV 17, move on.
The more filter media you have and the larger it is - the longer it will last.
