Live stake cutting season has started in the Kawartha lakes.
After a frost and the leaves have begun dropping, shows us that the plants are no longer producing carbohydrates and have entered dormancy.
These Willow live stakes and red osier dogwood live stakes will be going into a stormwater management pond and stream channel realignment project. We’ll finish up that project with some native species seeding.

Visiting one of long term sites in Leamington, Ontario.
Tall grass prairie coming along nicely and on schedule. The site was seeded fall 2024 and is now completing it’s second growing season. Asters and other perennial species coming along nicely and the Indian Grass is loving this site. Prairies take 3-5 years to establish and this one is looking like it is right on schedule.
As time and succession passes the grasses will dominate the perennial forbes.

We were out scouting the location of a new Ducks Unlimited wetland we are working on this fall. Beauty Bur Oak at the edge of the property. Very healthy ole girl. Native Landscape Solutions Inc. Is a good working partner of ours. They will be helping us on this one.

A beauty day planting trees and Hydroseeding native species.
GSU had the privilege of coordinating a day and
partnership between Otonabee Region Conservation Authority and McCloskey International Ltd. for a day of habitat enhancing on the McKloskey property. We planted 160 trees and shrubs around an existing stormwater management pond and Hydroseeding a mix of native perennial flowers and grasses into the existing meadow. The existing meadow is very sparse and vegetation and has majority exposed soils. This enhancement will create more biodiversity and protect the exposed soils on site.

Beautiful morning! Just wrapping up bringing in the last of the round bales after our delayed hay process. I can testify during our sessions of cutting and bailing the hay after July 15 there are plenty of Bob O’link and Meadowlark of all ages fledging from the field. The whole intention of delayed hay is to give time for the Young hatchlings to develop and grow old enough to fly away when hay Equipment comes by.

Just knocked off this serious lake scugog shoreline! Severe erosion from years of waves and lack of woody rooted vegetation.
3:1 stone slope and top of bank planting with native shrubs the whole length of the shore.
Cut lawns to the banks just erode away.
