Beautiful morning! Just wrapping up bringing in the last of the round bales after our delayed hay process. I can testify during our sessions of cutting and bailing the hay after July 15 there are plenty of Bob O’link and Meadowlark of all ages fledging from the field. The whole intention of delayed hay is to give time for the Young hatchlings to develop and grow old enough to fly away when hay Equipment comes by.

Planting 15 caliper native trees and potted 200+ native shrubs and Hydroseeding native species prairie mix for a landscape rehabilitation project.
Returning on a by weekly schedule for watering.

Just knocked off this serious lake scugog shoreline! Severe erosion from years of waves and lack of woody rooted vegetation.
3:1 stone slope and top of bank planting with native shrubs the whole length of the shore.
Cut lawns to the banks just erode away.

Thoughtful waterfront development helps protect the natural integrity of shorelines.

Choosing dock or boathouse locations in areas with little or no vegetation and limiting the amount of shoreline developed allows the majority of the shoreline to remain in its natural state. This helps maintain habitat, support biodiversity, and preserve shoreline health. 💧

Cutting hay and getting grey after July 15 to preserve bobolink and meadow lark fledglings. These annual hay cutting selfies sure show how quickly the silver hair comes in every year.
Did you know that these are species at risk in Ontario due to habitat loss?
Ever since we started cutting hay after July 15, our stem count per metre has increased and our hay yields have increased. We never have to over seed due to the fact that when we cut all the grasses are in seed. Significant portion of what is on the plant falls back on the ground to continue the cycle. Clover, Vetch and trefoils are full flower at this time of year as well. This makes for a high-quality and diverse pallet for the livestock during winter. Perfect for both horses and cows.
