Siya Forestry was proud to be represented by Dan Macmaster, Peter Flett, and Dylan Savoie at the BC Community Forest Association Conference in Vernon.
Dan took part in two sessions focused on the future of community forestry, local decision-making, and the benefits community forests bring to communities across British Columbia.

In the first session, Dan moderated a discussion on how community forests define and share the value of their work. The conversation looked at benefits such as local employment, economic activity, stewardship, recreation, wildfire risk reduction, education, and community well-being. He also joined the Big Ideas Panel alongside other forestry leaders to discuss new ideas and opportunities for the future of the sector. The panel invited participants to think differently about how forestry can support healthy forests, strong communities, and long-term care for the land.

For Siya Forestry, these conversations connect closely to the values that guide the work of local leadership, Indigenous stewardship, community benefit, collaboration, and responsible forest management. Conferences like this are an important opportunity to learn from others, share ideas, and continue building a forestry future that supports both the land and the people connected to it.

Dan Macmaster, Forestry Manager at Siya Forestry and Peter Flett, Head of Operations, Nk'Mip Forestry, are attending the BCCFA Annual Conference in Vernon this week.

The conference brings together community forests, First Nations, local governments, forestry professionals, and partners from across B.C. to share knowledge, build relationships, and discuss the future of community forestry. For Dan and Peter, it is an opportunity to stay connected to important conversations around First Nation-led forestry, wildfire risk reduction, local decision-making, and long-term care for the land.

Their participation helps bring new ideas and practical knowledge back to support Nk'Mip Forestry LLP, the West Boundary Community Forest, Osoyoos Indian Band and the communities within the traditional territory.

The Siya Forestry team recently joined OIB community members for huckleberry planting on the land.

This work is a reminder that healthy forests are about more than trees. They include plants, wildlife, water, soils, medicines, foods, and cultural values that have supported Syilx people for generations. By listening to OIB community members and learning directly on the land, forestry decisions become stronger, more respectful, and better connected to the long-term health of the territory.

On May 20, Siya Forestry team took part in Cultural Awareness Training at the Desert Cultural Centre.

The session was an important reminder that strong forestry practices begin with listening, learning, and asking questions. When forestry teams learn directly from OIB members, Elders, and knowledge holders, decisions on the land are guided by a deeper understanding of culture, history, wildlife, water, medicines, food systems, and future generations.

For Siya Forestry, this learning strengthens the way we approach our work and supports decisions that reflect Syilx values, respect cultural teachings, and contribute to healthier forests over time.
