Carbon Monoxide Awareness – Keep Your Family Safe

You can’t see or smell carbon monoxide, but it can be deadly. As heating season approaches, take a few simple steps to help protect your home and family:

• Have your furnace, fireplace, boiler and gas appliances serviced annually by a qualified professional.
• Install CO alarms near sleeping areas, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
• Test your CO alarms monthly. Check their expiry dates and replace batteries and alarms as recommended.
• Never operate generators or BBQs inside your home or garage—even with the doors open.
• Keep appliance vents and chimneys clear of snow, leaves and debris.

If your CO alarm sounds, get everyone outside into fresh air immediately. Call 911 from outside. Do not go back inside until emergency responders say it is safe.
