Koshino House, Ashiya (1979–84)

Tadao Ando’s Koshino House is a disciplined study of light, concrete, and movement. Embedded into the natural slope of the site, two parallel concrete volumes are connected by an underground passage, creating a quiet dialogue between architecture and landscape. Narrow linear openings carefully control daylight, allowing shifting shadows to animate the raw concrete interiors throughout the day. The curved studio addition introduces a softer rhythm against the strict geometry of the original composition. The result is an introspective sequence where space, light, and material exist in precise balance.
