Here is one question every homeowner should ask before hiring a contractor.

“How long have you worked with your trades?”

A long-standing team says a lot. It shows that the contractor values quality, reliability, and the people helping deliver the work.

Can you bring your own trade onto a renovation? Of course. But you need to be clear on accountability.

If your contractor has not vetted that person, they cannot fairly be responsible for their quality, schedule, or follow-up work. When you use a contractor’s established team, you are getting people they know, trust, and can hold accountable.

Most of my core trades have been with me for 25 to 30 years.

That kind of working relationship is built over time. They know the standard we expect, I know the quality they deliver, and we are there for each other when a project needs attention.

Loyalty goes both ways.

Instagram can show you the best photos from a company. It does not always show how they communicate, how they handle problems, or whether they deliver the quality you are expecting.

Before you hire a trade, go see their completed work. Ask questions. Talk to people who have worked with them.

The lowest quote is not always the lowest cost.

If a trade cannot meet the quality level, misses the timeline, or has to redo work, the savings disappear quickly. On a major renovation or custom home build, it is worth listening when an experienced contractor tells you they do not think someone is the right fit.

Most of the crews I work with have been with me for 25 to 30 years. That is not because I found them online one day. It comes from working together, seeing the quality of their work, treating each other fairly, and knowing they will be there when a job needs attention.

In this episode, I talk about why homeowners should be careful about choosing trades based only on price, social media, or a recommendation from someone they know. I also explain why using your contractor’s established team usually gives you better accountability, better communication, and a better finished product.

A lot has happened since day one on this Etobicoke custom home build.

From the early stages to the finishes starting to come together, this is what real progress looks like. There are always challenges along the way, but watching a home take shape never gets old.

Still lots to do, but we are getting there.

The custom cabinetry is in, the golf simulator is installed, and the basement is getting close.

There are still some finishing details to complete, but you can already see how this space is going to work. A place to hang out, entertain, and get a few swings in without leaving the house.

This is a big driveway and a big walkway, so snow melt made sense here.

It is an investment, but when heavy wet snow comes down, it can save a lot of work and make the property much safer. On a house of this size, it is one of those upgrades that becomes more practical every winter.
