Every spring opening we do includes opening the valve boxes and inspecting them — not a glance, an actual look inside. Most openings, that’s a thirty-second check that turns up nothing. This one didn’t. Box had visible signs of water leakage. A static pressure test confirmed it.
That’s a leak you’d never spot from the surface, and left alone it runs all summer — you don’t see it, you just pay for it on the water bill. Repairs feel expensive in the moment. In some municipalities they pay for themselves before the season’s out.
