VI HAZMAT FAQ

❓ Are asbestos contractors required to be licensed in British Columbia?

British Columbia, asbestos abatement work must be performed by licensed companies whose workers have completed the required training and certification.

Vancouver Island Hazmat is fully licensed through WorkSafeBC (License #00001111) and our employees have completed the necessary asbestos training to ensure remediation work is performed safely and in accordance with regulatory standards.

🦺 VI HAZMAT FAQ

❓ When can I expect to receive my estimate, and how soon could remediation work begin after approval?

Following your site visit, we typically provide estimates by email within 24–48 hours. For projects that are more complex or require additional planning, preparation of the estimate may take 6–10 days.

Project scheduling is based on both the size of the project and our current availability, but we always do our best to remain flexible and accommodate your needs.

If your project has a preferred start date or a specific timeline, we encourage you to discuss this with our office so we can work with you to plan accordingly.

Even though Vancouver Island Hazmat is based in Nanaimo, our team travels to the surrounding islands to assist with hazardous material remediation and demolition projects.

Island projects often require additional planning and coordination, especially when it comes to transporting equipment and safely disposing of hazardous materials. Our team has experience managing these logistics to ensure the work is completed safely and efficiently.

From asbestos removal and vermiculite insulation remediation to demolition, we provide the same professional service regardless of location.

If you have a project on Gabriola, Protection Island, Thetis, DeCourcy, Mudge or nearby islands, feel free to reach out.

🦺 VI HAZMAT FAQ

❓ Does the your estimate reflect all anticipated costs, or could there be additional charges?

Our goal is to provide clear and reliable pricing that reflects the full scope of work required. Estimates are prepared based on the project details and the findings outlined in the Hazardous Materials Report.

Unless otherwise noted, our estimates typically include containment setup, remediation and removal of identified hazardous materials, environmental testing where required, proper disposal of hazardous waste, and all labour, equipment, and protective measures needed to safely complete the work. Documentation for the Notice of Project (NOP) with WorkSafeBC is also included.

In the event that additional suspect materials are discovered during the course of work that were not identified in the Hazardous Materials Report, work will be paused in the affected area while appropriate testing is arranged. If necessary, an amended estimate will be provided outlining any changes to the scope of work, timeline, or cost.

Any exclusions will always be clearly noted in the original estimate.

🦺 ASBESTOS FAQ

💬 “ What determines the price of an asbestos remediation project?”

This is one of the most common questions we receive.

The cost of asbestos remediation depends on several factors unique to each project. These may include the type of asbestos-containing material present, the level of containment required to perform the work safely, and the accessibility of the affected area.

The amount of hazardous waste generated during removal must also be considered, as all materials must be properly packaged, transported, and disposed of in accordance with environmental regulations.

Additional factors such as environmental testing, specialized equipment, labour requirements, and regulatory compliance may also influence the overall scope and cost of the project.

🔍 Because each project is different, a proper site visit is necessary before preparing an accurate estimate.

ATTIC MOLD IS MORE COMMON THAN YOU THINK.

Poor ventilation.
Condensation.
Roof leaks.
Improper insulation

These are some of the most common reasons we find mold growth in attics across Vancouver Island.

Most homeowners never go up there — and by the time staining or odours appear, it’s already spread across roof sheathing and rafters.

At VI Hazmat & Demolition, we:

✔ Properly assess the source of moisture
✔ Build containment where required
✔ Use HEPA filtration & negative air
✔ Safely remediate affected materials
✔ Leave the space clean and ready for repair

Painting over it doesn’t fix it.
Bleach doesn’t fix it.
Fixing the moisture issue and remediating it properly does.

If you suspect attic mold, address it before it becomes a bigger structural and air quality issue.

OUT OF SIGHT DOESN’T MEAN OUT OF PROBLEM

Crawlspaces are one of the most common places we find mold growth.

Standing water
High humidity
Poor ventilation
Ground moisture without proper v***r barriers

Mold in crawlspaces can affect:

• Floor joists
• Subflooring
• Indoor air quality
• Structural integrity

And yes — air from your crawlspace can circulate into your living space.

At VI Hazmat & Demolition, we:

✔ Identify moisture sources
✔ Set up proper containment
✔ Remove contaminated materials
✔ Use HEPA filtration
✔ Leave the space safe and clean

Ignoring crawlspace mold won’t make it go away. It spreads.

If you’re renovating, selling, or just protecting your investment — make sure it’s handled properly.

Hazards handled. Done right

Renovating an Older Home? Don’t Overlook Lead

Lead isn’t just a concern during large projects — even small renovations can create contamination if the materials are not handled correctly.

During renovations or demolition, layers of old paint and building materials can contain lead. Once disturbed, fine dust is released that you may not see — but it can travel throughout the home or jobsite if not properly controlled.

Typical Locations Include:

• Window frames, sills, and casings
• Doors, door frames, and trim
• Baseboards and moldings
• Walls and ceilings with multiple paint layers
• Stair railings and banisters
• Built-in cabinetry and shelving
• Exterior siding, soffits, and painted structural elements
• Older flooring or coatings beneath newer finishes

VI Hazmat & Demolition works alongside your project team to identify, manage, and safely remove lead-containing materials so you can move ahead with confidence.

Let our team handle the hazards so you don’t have to!
