FortisBC is offering rebates covering up to 30% of eligible project costs for qualifying dual-fuel rooftop heating systems.

A customer recently arrived to find their refrigeration equipment had been targeted by copper thieves.

Unfortunately, the value of what gets stolen is often a fraction of the damage left behind.

Beyond the missing copper, there’s the loss of refrigerant, the repairs required to restore the system, and the disruption to a business that depends on that equipment every day.

One thing we’ve been looking into recently is the funding and incentive programs available to BC agricultural operations investing in refrigeration and energy efficiency.

And there are some opportunities worth knowing about.

For larger refrigeration systems, BC Hydro currently offers funding for energy-efficiency feasibility studies and incentives that can contribute toward qualifying refrigeration optimization projects.

That could create an interesting opportunity for farms and agricultural businesses already considering expanding cold storage, upgrading an aging refrigeration plant, improving capacity or making a larger system more energy efficient.

There are also incentives available for certain refrigeration controls, motors and efficiency upgrades.

The important part is looking at these opportunities before the project is designed and equipment is selected — because the type of system, energy consumption, utility provider and proposed improvements can all affect what may qualify.

We work with a number of farms and agricultural operations throughout BC, and this is something we want to start having more conversations about.

Tomorrow, September 30, marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

As a BC-owned and operated company, we’ve had the opportunity over the years to work alongside a number of First Nations communities and organizations throughout British Columbia.

Those relationships have given our team the opportunity to visit communities across the province, work alongside local teams, learn from the people we meet, and build relationships that extend beyond the individual projects we are there to complete.

We’re grateful for the trust that has been placed in Georgia Strait Refrigeration and for the relationships we have built — and continue to build — with First Nations communities across BC.

Tomorrow is an important day to recognize the history and ongoing impacts of the residential school system, to honour Survivors and the children who never returned home, and to reflect on the work of reconciliation that continues today.

For us, part of that means continuing to listen, learn, build relationships with respect, and appreciate the communities that welcome our crews throughout this province.

Sometimes two is better than one!

In commercial refrigeration, redundancy isn’t necessarily about needing twice the capacity. It’s about designing a system so that one equipment failure doesn’t immediately become an operational emergency.

Depending on the application, multiple refrigeration systems can provide staged capacity, better load management, and — most importantly — options when equipment needs maintenance or repairs.

For businesses relying on refrigeration every hour of the day, the conversation shouldn’t only be:

“Will the system keep temperature?”

It should also be:

“What happens when something fails?”

Good refrigeration design considers the answer to that question before the equipment ever gets installed.

That’s something we spend a lot of time thinking about at Georgia Strait Refrigeration — not simply installing equipment, but considering how the facility needs to operate years down the road.

One of the best parts of growing a business in BC has been the people we’ve had the opportunity to meet along the way.

Behind so many of the businesses we visit are other local families — people who have taken the same risks, put in the long days, built teams, created jobs and invested back into the communities they call home.

Planning an equipment replacement in 2026 or 2027? Read this before you order anything.

We’re seeing more opportunities for BC businesses to take advantage of incentive funding when upgrading certain commercial HVAC, refrigeration and mechanical systems.

The part that often gets missed?

The conversation about available incentives should happen before the equipment is selected — not after the project is complete.

For a business already facing an aging refrigeration system, rooftop unit, controls system or other major mechanical upgrade, available incentives can potentially change the economics of the project and even influence which equipment makes the most sense.

There are currently programs available in BC for qualifying energy-efficiency projects, including certain HVAC, refrigeration and mechanical upgrades.

Regular Maintenance Makes a Difference

This is a great example of why regular maintenance is so important.

This equipment is actually maintained twice a year, including cleaning during each service. Even with that schedule, this is how much buildup accumulated between visits.

When coils become this restricted, airflow is significantly reduced. That can make equipment work harder than it needs to, increasing energy consumption, putting unnecessary wear on components, reducing performance and potentially shortening the life of the system.

Regular maintenance isn’t just about fixing something when it stops working. It’s about catching issues early, keeping equipment clean and helping systems operate as efficiently and reliably as possible.
