Kimesskanemenow Limited Partnership Kimesskanemenow is a Cree word which means our road. From Moosonee there is a rail link to the main Ontario provincial highway system at Cochrane.

The James Bay Winter Road connects the communities of Attawapiskat, Fort Albany, and Kashechewan to Moosonee through the annual construction and maintenance of an ice road. The James Bay Winter Road is operated and managed by the Kimesskanemenow Corporation, a corporation jointly owned by the four communities it connects, Attawapiskat, Fort Albany, Moose Cree and Kashechewan. The word kimesskanemenow is a Cree word which means our road.

NOTICE – JAMES BAY WINTER ROAD CLOSURE

Effective immediately, the winter road is now closed for the season.

From this date forward, any travel on the road is at your own risk. Road conditions are no longer being monitored or maintained, and users should be aware that hazards may exist, including deteriorating ice conditions, reduced surface integrity, and limited accessibility.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the many hardworking contractors and foremen whose dedication, skill, and long hours made this season’s operations possible. Their efforts are recognized and greatly valued.

Please exercise caution and plan accordingly.

2026 Wetum Road Season Closure

Please be advised that the Wetum Road will officially close on Tuesday, March 31, 2026 at 11:59 p.m.

Decommissioning of the Wetum will be begin April 1, 2026. The official closures date is based on permitting and insurance.

While current conditions are favourable, they can change at any time and safety remains paramount for all involved. We wish to thank Innlink for their hard work this season as they dealt with exceptional weather events over the past few months.

Community Link Ice Road Closure

The Moosonee - Moose Factory Community Link Ice Road is also closing on Tuesday, March 31, 2026 at 11:59 pm. It will be on a “Use at Your Own Risk” basis on April 1, 2026. The road will no longer be maintained.

Winter Road Update: We plan to close the James Bay Winter Road for the season on Thursday, April 2. After this date all maintenance will stop. Please be cautious when approaching commercial traffic on the road.

Winter Road Update: The James Bay Winter Road will reopen at 5:00 PM on March 19. Crews are continuing to widen the stretch between km 40 and 65, which remains reduced to a single lane due to the large volumes of snow.

If you plan to travel through this area, please proceed with caution as heavy equipment is actively working to restore two-lane access.

Be prepared to yield to oncoming traffic in this section—you may need to reverse to a wider area to safely pass.

Wetum Road update:

Our crews are working hard to re-open Wetum we are battling 5-6 feet of snow between milage 80 to 96 in the Big Swamp. We are hoping to get road re-opened late Thursday afternoon.
