Le 21 juin, célébrons la Journée nationale des peuples autochtones ! 🌿

Pour cette 30e édition, nous rendons hommage aux organismes exceptionnels avec lesquels nous avons la chance de collaborer. Projets Autochtones Du Québec aide les membres des communautés autochtones de Montréal à accéder à des refuges d'urgence, des logements et des soins adaptés à leur culture. Isuarsivik Regional Recovery Centre offre des programmes de rétablissement holistiques et adaptés à la culture pour aider les Nunavimmiut à retrouver leur force intérieure et leur bien-être. Les sages-femmes du Nunavik, quant à elles, renforcent l'autonomie des communautés inuit et soutiennent la réappropriation des soins périnataux.

Par leur travail de terrain, ces organismes offrent un accompagnement indépendant et adapté, et contribuent à la sécurisation culturelle des services destinés aux peuples autochtones. Quel engagement inspirant ! 🧡

On June 21, celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day! 🌿

For this 30th edition, we would like to honour the exceptional organizations we have the privilege to work with. Projets Autochtones Du Québec helps members of Indigenous communities living in Montreal access emergency shelters, housing, and culturally adapted care. Isuarsivik Regional Recovery Centre offers holistic, culturally adapted, trauma-informed recovery programs to help Nunavimmiut recover their inner strength and well-being. The Nunavik midwives, for their part, empower Inuit communities and support the reclamation of perinatal care.

Through their on-the-ground work, these organizations provide culturally responsive, independent social services support, contributing to culturally safe services for Indigenous peoples. Truly inspiring commitment! 🧡

🏛️CCA, Centre Canadien d'Architecture / Canadian Centre for Architecture – Travaux de conservation
Depuis 2018, EVOQ Architecture assure la réhabilitation et la restauration de plusieurs aspects du complexe du Centre Canadien d'Architecture, institution internationale de recherche et musée, dont la valeur patrimoniale est reconnue aux trois niveaux de gouvernement.

EVOQ a réalisé une série de mandats complémentaires, débutant par une série d’études. La réfection des toitures plates du bâtiment contemporain a nécessité des détails de construction sur mesure pour préserver les intentions conceptuelles des années 1980. Le couronnement en fer forgé et de fonte de la Maison Shaughnessy historique a été restauré au même moment. La restauration du jardin de sculptures de Melvin Charney a mis en œuvre des méthodes de nettoyage et de réparation du béton élaborées sur mesure grâce à une étroite collaboration interdisciplinaire. Enfin, la réfection complète de l'enveloppe du rez-de-chaussée du bâtiment principal, incluant les réparations de maçonnerie, l'imperméabilisation et le remplacement des fenêtres, est réalisée dans le respect du soin apporté à la construction d'origine.

🏛️CCA, Centre Canadien d'Architecture / Canadian Centre for Architecture – Conservation Works
Since 2018, EVOQ Architecture has been responsible for the rehabilitation and restoration of several aspects of the Canadian Centre for Architecture complex, an international research institution and museum whose heritage value is recognized by all three levels of government.

EVOQ has completed a series of complementary mandates, beginning with a set of preliminary studies. The replacement of the flat roofs of the contemporary main addition of the CCA required custom construction details to preserve the original conceptual intentions of the 1980s. The wrought and cast iron cresting of historic Shaughnessy House was restored at the same time. The restoration of Melvin Charney's sculpture garden involved bespoke concrete cleaning and repair methods developed through close interdisciplinary collaboration. Finally, the full envelope rehabilitation of the main addition’s ground level, including masonry repairs, waterproofing, and window replacement, is being carried out to respect the careful detailing of the original construction.

🏛️Ancien hôtel de ville de Toronto - Rapport sur les structures historiques et aménagement du Musée
Icône architecturale au cœur du quartier financier de Toronto, l'ancien hôtel de ville a été conçu par E.J. Lennox dans les années 1890. En 2014, EVOQ a complété un Rapport sur les structures historiques (RSH) afin d'orienter la transformation de l'édifice vers de nouveaux usages, tout en préservant ses valeurs patrimoniales exceptionnelles. Le travail comprenait un inventaire complet pièce par pièce, une évaluation de l'état du bâtiment, une analyse des éléments à caractère patrimonial ainsi qu'une cartographie hiérarchique des zones patrimoniales. Des études d'accessibilité et de mise à niveau en sécurité incendie ont également été menées.

En 2016–2018, EVOQ a collaboré avec CS&P et Lord Consulting aux études d'aménagement schématiques pour le Musée de Toronto, développant un plan de conservation détaillé pour guider l'intégration des nouveaux usages muséaux et commerciaux dans le respect du caractère patrimonial du bâtiment. Ces travaux ont été suivis d'une étude sur les usages transitoires en 2021–2022, incluant la mise en œuvre de mises à niveau sécuritaires. En 2025, EVOQ a fourni à CreateTO une révision patrimoniale des usages proposés pour l'édifice.

🏛️Toronto Old City Hall — Historic Structure Report & Museum Fit-Out
An architectural icon at the heart of Toronto's financial district, Old City Hall was designed by E.J. Lennox in the 1890s. In 2014, EVOQ completed a Historic Structure Report (HSR) to guide the building's transition toward new uses while preserving its exceptional heritage values. The scope of work included a comprehensive room-by-room inventory, a building condition assessment, a heritage character analysis, and a hierarchical mapping of heritage zones. Life safety and accessibility upgrade studies were also carried out.

In 2016-2018, EVOQ collaborated with CS&P and Lord Consulting on schematic fit-up studies for the Toronto Museum Project, developing a detailed conservation plan to guide the integration of new museum and commercial uses in keeping with the building's heritage character. This work was followed with an Interim Uses Study in 2021-2022 and included the implementation of security upgrades. In 2025, EVOQ provided CreateTO a heritage review on proposed uses for the building.

🏛️ 12 ans de suivi au palais de justice du comté d'Elgin.

Depuis 2014, EVOQ assure l'inspection annuelle du palais de justice du comté d'Elgin, à St. Thomas, en Ontario, dans le cadre du programme d'entretien de cet édifice patrimonial dont la valeur architecturale et historique mérite une attention soutenue.

Ce mandat réunit des professionnels de nos bureaux de Montréal et de Toronto, qui se retrouvent chaque année avec le même entrain dans la sympathique ville de St. Thomas. Cette année, Emily et Jake, de notre bureau de Toronto, étaient de la partie; fidèles au rendez-vous! 👷‍♀️👷‍♂️

✨ Une nouveauté cette année : la photographie par drone a permis d'examiner des portions du bâtiment inaccessibles aux inspections habituelles, des zones non documentées depuis les travaux de réhabilitation.

Peu de mandats offrent cette perspective : observer un même bâtiment année après année, en suivre l'évolution et affiner sa lecture au fil du temps. Le bâtiment se porte bien; un résultat partagé avec l'équipe d'Atkins Réalis, dont le suivi rigoureux fait partie de l'équation. 🤝

Nous en sommes au tiers d'un mandat de 30 ans : 18 années devant nous pour continuer d'apprendre et d'approfondir une expertise qui se construit visite après visite.

🏛️ 12 years of monitoring at the Elgin County Courthouse.

Since 2014, EVOQ has been conducting annual inspections of the Elgin County Courthouse in St. Thomas, Ontario, as part of the building's heritage maintenance program; a mandate that reflects the architectural and historical significance of this landmark.

This mandate brings together architects from our Montréal and Toronto offices, who return each year with the same enthusiasm to the welcoming city of St. Thomas. This year, Emily and Jake from our Toronto office were once again part of the team; a familiar and valued presence on site! 👷‍♀️👷‍♂️

✨ A new addition this year: drone photography allowed us to examine portions of the building that have been inaccessible to conventional inspections, areas undocumented since the rehabilitation works.

Few mandates offer this kind of perspective: observing the same building year after year, tracking its evolution, and refining one's understanding over time. The building is in good health; a result we share with the team at Atkins Réalis, whose diligent stewardship is very much part of the story. 🤝

We are one third of the way through a 30-year mandate: with 18 years ahead to keep learning and deepening an expertise built one visit at a time.

🏆Le 12 mai dernier, Sayeh Jolan et Charline Lezerac ont souligné le travail de la relève en remettant le prix EVOQ au projet « Le Quartier du Dimanche » dans l’atelier final de Design Urbain. Ce projet, réalisé par Vanni Lussier, Alexandre Molard et Céleste Marquis, nous a touché avec son intégration fine et paysagère au site emblématique de la Tohu, malgré tous les défis qu’il comporte.

Félicitations à tous les finissants et finissantes de Design de l’Environnement de l’ de design de l’UQAM !

🏆On May 12th, Sayeh Jolan and Charline Lezerac highlighted the work of the next generation by presenting the EVOQ award to the project "Le Quartier du Dimanche" in the final Urban Design studio. This project, created by Vanni Lussier, Alexandre Molard, and Céleste Marquis, moved us with its thoughtful and landscape-sensitive integration into the iconic Tohu site, despite all the challenges it entails.

EVOQ Architecture X Ryder Architecture proposition for the 200-Block Banff Avenue Redevelopment competition.

Our proposal for the Banff National Park Visitor Centre envisions the new Visitor Centre as a place of arrival and encounter, a symbolic gateway to Banff National Park. It emerges from the landscape, informed by the geology, history, and cultural significance of the site. Grounded in an understanding of place, the design acknowledges the enduring presence and stewardship of Indigenous peoples whose connection to this land predates colonial boundaries.

The architectural and landscape approach draws from the town’s built and rustic heritage while reflecting the enduring significance of the broader geography, particularly the Bow River Valley. The mountains and the river remain the living ancestors of the territory, shaping knowledge, healing, identity, and connection to place. Their cultural and spiritual significance endures for the many Indigenous nations who continue to call the valley home.

The project’s ascending progression reinforces the site’s connection to Banff’s surrounding landscape. The building’s sectional organization shapes the design experience, establishing a promenade of ascent that guides visitors through the Centre’s program activities. The architecture frames views of the peaks surrounding the town, revealing the geography that defines it.

Architecture is an echo of the land, embracing the authenticity of materials, the memory of place, and the natural rhythms of the landscape.

🌿Écoquartier ITUM
En collaboration avec Atelier Urbain, 2Architectures et O’yenhra, EVOQ Architecture a développé des concepts d'habitation et de développement d’un écoquartier destiné à la communauté d'Innu Takuaikan Uashat mak Mani-utenam (ITUM). Ce projet unique conjugue respect des traditions innues et réponse aux défis contemporains liés aux changements climatiques.

Notre proposition s'articule autour de trois axes prioritaires pour la communauté : le développement durable, l'optimisation des espaces intérieurs et l'harmonisation entre l'habitation et son environnement extérieur. Les recommandations architecturales visent à minimiser l'empreinte environnementale, améliorer le confort des occupants et diminuer la consommation énergétique.

En intégrant les valeurs culturelles de la communauté innue dès la conception, ce projet témoigne d'une approche sensible et respectueuse, où l'architecture devient un vecteur de préservation identitaire.

🌿ITUM Eco-Neighborhood
In collaboration with Atelier Urbain, 2Architectures, and O’yenhra, EVOQ Architecture has developed housing and eco-neighborhood development concepts for the Innu Takuaikan Uashat mak Mani-utenam (ITUM) community. This unique project combines respect for Innu traditions with a response to contemporary challenges related to climate change.

Our proposal is based on three priorities for the community: sustainable development, optimization of interior spaces, and harmony between housing and its outdoor environment. The architectural design aims to minimize the environmental footprint, improve occupant comfort, and reduce energy consumption.

By integrating the cultural values of the Innu community from the design stage onwards, this project demonstrates a sensitive and respectful approach, where architecture becomes a vehicle for preserving identity.

Un édifice centenaire au cœur du Vieux-Montréal ✨

Construit entre 1899 et 1902, l'édifice Gérald-Godin (360 McGill) est un joyau patrimonial et l'un des témoins les plus remarquables de l'histoire industrielle et institutionnelle de Montréal. Ancien siège social de la compagnie de chemins de fer du Grand Tronc, puis du Canadien National, il est aujourd'hui protégé en vertu de la Loi sur le patrimoine culturel et inscrit dans le secteur de valeur patrimoniale exceptionnelle du Vieux-Montréal.

EVOQ accompagne ce bâtiment depuis plus de vingt ans, de la restauration de ses éléments patrimoniaux à diriger en co-dirigeant l'analyse et de la planification en vue de sa réhabilitation à venir.

A century-old building in the heart of Old Montreal ✨

Built between 1899 and 1902, the Gérald-Godin Building (360 McGill) is a heritage gem and one of the most remarkable testaments to Montreal’s industrial and institutional history. Once the head office of the Grand Trunk Railway, then of Canadian National, it is now protected under the Cultural Heritage Act and recognized as part of Old Montreal’s sector of exceptional heritage value.

EVOQ has been involved with the building for over twenty years, from the restoration of its heritage elements to co-leading the analysis and planning for its upcoming rehabilitation.

Consultations publiques pour le futur Centre d’accueil du Parc national Nibiischii 🌿

En avril, nos collègues Roxanne et Mathilde ont visité Mistissini, en Eeyou Istchee (territoire Cri), dans le cadre du développement du Centre d’accueil du Parc national Nibiischii (Nibiischii - Réserve faunique Albanel Mistassini Waconichi) : https://www.nibiischii.com/fr/.

Elles ont pu visiter le site du projet, mais surtout participer au premier tour des consultations avec les membres de la communauté. Animées par l’équipe de La Boîte Rouge VIF, avec le support d’EVOQ, les rencontres ont permis de connaitre la perspective et les souhaits de différents groupes de la communauté : les jeunes, les aînés, le groupe de tourisme et développement économique ainsi que les maîtres-trappeurs (Cree Tallymen).

✨ Les idées partagées lors de ces riches échanges nourriront la conception du bâtiment aux prochaines étapes du projet.

Public Consultations for the future Nibiischii National Park Welcome Center 🌿

In April, our colleagues Roxanne and Mathilde visited Mistissini, in Eeyou Istchee (Cree territory) Quebec, for our Welcome Center project for the Nibiischii National Park (Nibiischii - Réserve faunique Albanel Mistassini Waconichi): https://www.nibiischii.com/en/.

As well as touring the site, they participated in the first round of important consultations with community members. Facilitated by La Boîte Rouge VIF team with support from EVOQ, the workshops provided insight into the perspectives and wishes of youth and elders, tourism and economic development groups, and Cree tallymen, the traditional land stewards of this region.

✨ The ideas shared during these insightful exchanges will deeply inform our work as we begin the project design.

Nous sommes ravis que le projet Union Station ait été nommé parmi les 20 finalistes des Design Excellence Awards 2026 de Ontario Association of Architects . Nous sommes fiers d’y avoir contribué à titre d’architectes spécialisés en patrimoine, en collaboration avec NORR.

Sélectionnés par un jury d’experts en design, les finalistes de cette année représentent une grande diversité de typologies de bâtiments. Choisi parmi 96 candidatures, notre projet a été évalué selon des critères tels que la créativité, la sensibilité au contexte, la durabilité, l’intégration d’un design exemplaire et fonctionnel, ainsi que la pérennité.
