Granadilla is a “vitamin bomb”. Each component in its composition is important for the human body and takes part in a large number of different metabolic processes. The fruits are rich in vitamins B, C, PP and K. Minerals include: calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, sodium, zinc, phosphorus, copper, selenium.

The homeland of granadilla is South America. In Colombia, Bolivia and other countries in this region, it is found growing wild. The cultivation of this fruit has recently become widespread in Haiti, Hawaii and Jamaica.

Granadilla or passion fruit, Passiflora ligularis.
This fabulous fruit is a favorite of many people (except some people who don't like pips or fruit in general).

There are many different varieties of this vine, mostly native to Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina, but now grown in many hot places, including Kosi Bay.

We always serve fruit at breakfast for guests, fresh fruit salad, sliced pineapple, prepared grapefruit, depends on the season. But our latest French couple were introduced to granadillas. Our waitress Sbongile cut one in half for each guest to taste, and they asked her to cut another one for them. They really enjoyed them. They even wanted to take some on the beach with them!

Granadillas come in various colours, but the locally grown ones are yellow green. Apparently all varieties and colours, whether yellow, brown, orange, or purple, all taste the same. I say yum 😋. How about you?
