CarbiCrete CarbiCrete is a carbon removal technology company whose patented technology enables the production of cement-free, decarbonized concrete.

CarbiCrete's fully carbon-negative process replaces cement with steel slag, an industrial by-product, avoiding the emissions that are associated with cement production, while also trapping CO2 inside the concrete permanently. CarbiCrete is licensing its technology to precast concrete makers. Products made using our technology are less expensive, more durable and more environmental than their cement-based counterparts…all while ridding the environment of harmful emissions. For every tonne of concrete produced using our process, 150kg of CO2 are abated/removed. Our mission: 1 GT of carbon-negative concrete per year in a decade.

Last week, Phil De Luna wrote in Forbes about Canada's global standing as a pioneer of removal (CDR). is uniquely positioned to not only develop groundbreaking in the CDR industry, but to export in the form of verified emissions removal and storage on the global carbon markets.

"For decades, Canada has thought of as a problem it has to manage at home. This is the first real sign that it sees a different role for itself as well: the country that cleans up the world’s ."

CarbiCrete's cement-free technology is bringing verified carbon removal from Canada to the world. Via carbon mineralization, is permanently stored in each of our products for thousands of years.

Embodied carbon, the emissions resulting from a building's materials and , can represent a significant portion of a project's total . Intelligent design choices can put an emphasis on from the start and make a big difference in a building's overall associated emissions.

Choosing smarter materials, like CarbiCrete's cement-free products made with steel slag, can greatly reduce embodied carbon, showcase groundbreaking , and set a solid foundation of emissions reduction throughout a building's lifetime.

Carbon Leadership Forum (CLF), Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), New Buildings Institute (NBI), Center for Architecture (AIANY), and RMI recently developed the Embodied Carbon State Policy Playbook to outline best practices for reducing across the built environment:

"Reducing embodied carbon is a win across the board. Cutting embodied carbon also encourages economic development, creates jobs, strengthens supply chains, and supports healthier communities"

When developing a new project, making smart material choices can have a major effect on the building's whole-life carbon .

Embodied carbon, which is associated with a building's materials and construction process, is locked in right at the start of a project: "Emissions can be designed into a project long before construction begins ... Early and procurement choices therefore have a significant influence on the final outcome"

CarbiCrete's cement-free has an EPD-verified potential 20X lower than conventional concrete while offering the same performance, making it an easy choice to showcase and reduce emissions.

CarbiCrete's steel slag-based is cured via mineralization in a carbonation chamber, where each block permanently absorbs and traps . This helps to address the significant problem of carbon dioxide in cement-based concrete-- nearly 8% of all global emissions each year.

You may have heard about cement-based concrete experiencing "natural carbonation", over time, a small percentage of can be re-absorbed into conventional concrete from the air. A new study out of UCLA Samueli School of Engineering finds that, in addition to taking hundreds of years, this potential is less than previously thought: "this natural process, known as ambient carbonation, offsets less than 10% of the industry’s own annual carbon dioxide emissions."

CarbiCrete's process is different: we accelerate carbonation by actively injecting CO2 into our curing chambers, storing significantly more in our concrete right from the start. Through our carbon dioxide mineralization , CarbiCrete products both avoid cement-related emissions and actively trap CO2 away, leading to concrete products with a significantly lower .
