I havenā€™t seen one frog this summer. I usually have multiple frogs living in this little pond. I also usually see them hopping around the ditch out front. Not one this year. That makes me really worried. I havenā€™t seen a fox either. I see lots of mice, rats, bunnies and even the odd snake. The hawks are rampant. But no frogs. Have you seen frogs in your garden this year?

I gotta mow the lawn. I need to figure out why the cherry trees die off mid summer. I should probably w**d the beds that still have a chance. Is there rain in the forecast? I hope so. Should I water the garden anyway? Itā€™s going to be 35 again today and itā€™s just going to burn off anyway. I donā€™t want to run my well dry. I wish there wasnā€™t so much traffic. I wish I could relax. Ahhh, that was a nice ten seconds of quiet. The birds always sing once the traffic stops. If I had a hammock, I could lay here for hours. I wonder where all these people work? Back and forth every day. Well, I guess Iā€™d better get to work.

My garden sort of looks like the inside of my house right now and the inside of my house sort of looks like the inside of my brain. Itā€™s a good thing thereā€™s gooseberries! I donā€™t know why I remember these being sour when I was a kid but these ones taste like candy!

Clearly Iā€™ve sort of let things go this year which begs the questionā€¦How does everyone deal with black flies and mosquitoes? I usually try to power through them but for some reason, this summer, Iā€™ve been having really bad reactions to the bites which has made me lose my mojo to be out there. I was thinking bat houses or maybe swallow houses? Iā€™m not into sprays or scents and Iā€™m not a huge fan of wearing extra clothing. Iā€™m almost always in my bare feet unless Iā€™m digging. Iā€™d love to hear how you co-exist with the biting insects in your garden? I havenā€™t seen any frogs in the frog pond this year and thereā€™s always been two since I built it. That sort of makes me sad but the summer isnā€™t over yet!

I spend at least an hour every day in my yard simply observing all the life around me. The closer you look, the more souls youā€™ll meet. When I walk barefoot through my yard, I can literally feel the earth thanking me for walking gently. I can also feel all the little souls in my yard trying their best to drown out the noise from the mad, chaotic world flying by behind me. If I sit there long enough, they always win. The ants crawling over my feet. The crickets just finishing their song. The newly born hummingbird siblings chasing each other around. I think the blue jays are screaming about how good it feels to loose all the old feathers so the new ones can grow in. I think it would be easier to name the animals I havenā€™t seen enjoying this space. I honestly canā€™t believe the transformation this yard has made in just 6 years and I canā€™t even imagine what another 6 will make.

I managed to get more than half of everything in the ground and if I could have handled the black flies any longer I would have finished. Broccoli and celery are all in Snap peas and Carrots are seeded. White and sweet potatoes are in. Half of the tomatoes and peppers are in too. We will see what happens because Iā€™ve never planted my garden this early but these plants were begging to get out of those dixie cups so itā€™s a big gamble. If everything dies, Iā€™ll just plant flowers šŸ˜…

I also somehow managed to kill 5 different species of mint which is an absolute miracle because itā€™s impossible to kill mint! I have no idea what happened. I planted them all in old whiskey barrels that were cut in half so Iā€™m not sure if it was the left over whiskey or the winter freeze.

Happy Liberation Day! While I wish I had a quaint little greenhouse to start my plants inside, Iā€™m grateful that I have a basement that can accommodate an artificial one. This yearā€™s garden is more or less a Hail Mary of whatever seeds I had on hand. Thereā€™s celery and a variety of different tomatoes, herbs, brassicas, peppers, tubers and even some lemon grass! My garden beds are all ready and even though I havenā€™t really felt motivated this season, I know getting my hands in the dirt is exactly what I need to get into the Summer spirit!

Look who just woke up!? šŸ° I guess you could say The Garden of Vegan is starting to come alive again! I have been feeling very unmotivated this pre-garden season but I do have my seeds all spread out across my kitchen table so weā€™re about to get our hands and paws dirty over here!
