This Milton staircase was covered in black paint for decades — and the homeowners thought a full teardown might be the only option.

Instead, we kept the original staircase structure and rebuilt the look around it with solid oak tread recapping, white risers, new oak posts and handrails, and black iron spindles.

The goal was to make the staircase feel like it belonged with the new flooring — cleaner, lighter and more timeless.

Why do we stain stair treads before installation?

Every stair recapping project starts long before installation day. In our shop, each stair tread and riser is carefully sanded, stained, and painted before arriving at the client’s home.

This process gives us better quality control, a more consistent finish, and helps reduce dust and disruption during installation.

Underneath all of it: solid oak, waiting.

We replaced the treads, swapped the turned spindles for square pickets, and refinished everything in place. No demolition. Four days.
