🌍 This , we stand with the global movement to — not just in the oceans, but across the built environment.

At Belnor Engineering, we know that pollution doesn’t start in the oceans—it starts in design. From product packaging to building materials, plastic is embedded in our systems. That’s why we’re reimagining what sustainability looks like at the intersection of architecture, engineering, and innovation.

Our work goes beyond green products. We provide smart, sustainable solutions that eliminate waste, enhance performance, and build toward a circular future—because pollution is not a byproduct of progress; it’s a symptom of outdated systems.

🔁 Let’s build smarter. Let’s build cleaner. Let’s beat plastic pollution—together.

🔥As wildfire smoke creeps into Toronto, Halton Hills, and the GTA, Environment Canada has issued multiple warnings.

💨“Wildfire smoke can be harmful to everyone’s health even at low concentrations.,” Environment Canada states. “Everyone can take action to reduce their exposure to wildfire smoke.”

🫁People with lung disease (such as asthma) or heart disease, older adults, children, pregnant people, and people who work outdoors are at higher risk.

💡Environment Canada and Health Canada have suggested to:

✅Stop or reduce your activity level if breathing becomes uncomfortable or you or someone in your care feel unwell. Contact your healthcare provider or local health authority if you develop severe symptoms or need advice.
✅Check the Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) and monitor your symptoms. People respond differently to smoke. Mild irritation and discomfort are common and usually disappear when the smoke clears. Drinking lots of water can help your body cope with the smoke.
✅If you have an HVAC system in your home, use the highest-rated MERV filter for your system (ideally rated 13 or higher) and set the fan to recirculate air constantly. You can also use a portable High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) air cleaner. Keep your doors and windows closed if the temperature in your home is comfortable.
✅Take a break from the smoke at a location in your community where you can find clean, cool air.
✅If you must spend time outdoors, a well-fitted respirator-type mask that does not allow air to pass through small openings between the mask and face, can help reduce your exposure to the fine particles in smoke.
✅Be sure to check on people in your care and those around you who may be more susceptible to smoke.
✅Reduce sources of indoor air pollution. If you can, avoid smoking or va**ng indoors, burning incense and candles, frying foods, using wood stoves and vacuuming. Dust on indoor surfaces can be removed by wiping and wet mopping during a pollution episode.

Wildlife smoke can significantly impact indoor air quality and therefore, our health. Smoke from wildfires can contain harmful particles such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter. These particles can cause respiratory issues and aggravate existing conditions such as asthma. It is important to take measures to improve indoor air quality during times of increased wildfire activity, such as using air purifiers and keeping windows and doors closed.

As ‘severe and unusual’ smoke from Canadian wildfires is spreading as we speak, air quality warnings extending far into the United States are likely to become more common with climate change.

“The levels of air pollution that we’re seeing today are severe and unusual in Canada and in parts of the U.S.,” said Rebecca Saari, an air quality expert at the University of Waterloo.

The Associated Press reported Wednesday that the AQI exceeded a staggering 400 at times in Syracuse, New York City and Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley. A level of 50 or under is considered good; anything over 300 is considered “hazardous.”

Meanwhile, the air quality in Toronto ranked among the worst in the world for much of Wednesday.

The levels in Kingston and points further east in Ontario were considerably worse on both scales.

Those areas had among the highest levels of particulate matter — known as PM2.5 levels — in the country.

Those particles are so small — 30 times smaller than the diameter of a human hair — that they can go into the lungs and into the bloodstream, said Dr. Samir Gupta, a respirologist at the University of Toronto.

“So you can imagine the havoc that they wreak in the lungs themselves,” he said. “That’s the most sensitive organ to all of this in terms of breathing symptoms, particularly people who have underlying lung conditions like asthma.”

As wildfires continue to rage out of control in Quebec, severe levels of air pollution have prompted air quality warnings across vast portions of eastern Canada and the U.S. CBC News spoke to experts and consulted recent studies to show the potential health impacts of the smoke in the air.

The Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors’ National Association (SMACNA), the leader in promoting quality and excellence in the sheet metal and air conditioning industry, today announced the launch of WeAreWhatWeBreathe.com, a new website designed to raise public awareness for indoor air pollution and how indoor air quality (IAQ) improvements can help improve occupant’s health.

This comprehensive site operates as a one-stop-shop for visitors to explore how ventilation, airflow and indoor air quality impact schools, homes and office settings. Visitors can learn about the Ventilation Verification assessment, an important physical examination of a building’s HVAC system made by trained and certified HVAC or Testing, Adjusting & Balancing technicians: https://www.achrnews.com/articles/153075-new-website-by-smacna-raises-awareness-for-indoor-air-quality

HVACR contractors need to be aware that the 2023 summer weather forecast predicts a hot and dry season.

While there is uncertainty about whether it will be an El Niño or La Niña summer, it is important to prepare for high temperatures. We also know the importance of HVAC in ESG and DEI given that vulnerable populations are bearing the brunt of a changing climate even with our own local communities and not just certain countries.

Contractors should take necessary precautions to ensure that their systems are equipped to handle the heat and keep their clients cool and comfortable. The same goes for building managers, engineers, and facility managers involved in higher-scale structures.

These precautions may include:

✅checking and cleaning air filters
✅inspecting and repairing ductwork
✅ensuring proper refrigerant levels
✅testing thermostat functionality

Contractors should also recommend that clients schedule routine maintenance appointments to ensure their systems are in top working condition. By taking these precautions, contractors can ensure that their clients remain cool, comfortable, and most importantly, healthy, during the upcoming summer season.

HVACR contractors need to prepare for the summer temperatures around the country favored to be above normal, with potential dry heat, tropical storms, and wildfires.
