🍂 5 Fall Cleanup Mistakes GTA Homeowners Should Avoid Before Winter
A tidy yard looks great—but a thoughtful fall cleanup also helps protect your lawn, gardens and outdoor spaces through winter.
If you own a property in Mississauga, Brampton or anywhere in the GTA, watch out for these five common mistakes.
1. Leaving thick piles of leaves on your lawn
A light layer of dry leaves can be shredded with a mulching mower to return organic matter to the soil. Thick, wet piles need a different approach: they can block sunlight and smother the grass beneath them.
Mulch manageable layers and collect the excess. Suitable leaves can go into garden beds or compost rather than being discarded.
2. Putting the mower away too early
Cooler weather doesn’t always mean your lawn has stopped growing. Continue mowing as needed while growth continues, and avoid removing more than one-third of the grass blade at a time.
Don’t scalp the lawn for winter. Adjust your mowing schedule to the grass’s growth and avoid mowing frost-covered or waterlogged turf.
3. Clearing every garden bed completely
A healthy fall garden doesn’t need to be stripped bare. Some standing stems, seed heads and leaves provide shelter for beneficial insects and food for birds.
Remove diseased plant material and unwanted debris, but consider leaving healthy plants with winter interest. Pruning and cutting back should depend on the plant—not simply the season.
4. Letting leaves block drainage and cover walkways
Fall cleanup goes beyond the lawn. Leaves and debris can collect around drainage grates and catch basins, obstructing water flow.
Keep these areas clear and regularly clean steps, patios and walkways. Wet leaves can make walking surfaces slippery and hide uneven ground.
5. Forgetting irrigation winterization
An irrigation system needs attention before freezing conditions arrive. Water remaining in vulnerable components can freeze and cause damage.
Arrange winterization suited to your system, and remember to disconnect garden hoses and follow the appropriate shutoff procedure for outdoor taps.
