On Saturday night, I had the pleasure of meeting the fire department, on Sasquatch Mountain. Unfortunately, it was due to circumstances that could have been prevented.

One of our customers who had someone else install their generator had called us to do maintenance and warranty work. We advised them that their generator was installed against the manufacturers requirements as is most of the ones on the mountain.

The homeowner was called due to their renters feeling lightheaded and sick. Due to the incorrect install this caused the people in the house to start getting carbon monoxide poisoning and call 911.

The fire department couldn’t turn the generator off, so the homeowner called us thankfully I was on the mountain and was able to be there within five minutes of his phone call.

I met with the fire department, unlocked the generator, and shut it down. I did give the fire department a key so that should it happen again in the future, they have the ability to shut it off with the override and not the outside switch which would have to cause an error needing to be reset.

The fire hall also has a generator, but it wasn’t working. I stopped by to have a look at it and sure enough it also has been installed against the code. I was able to get it up and running for the time being as well. I did advise them, though that it needs to be installed correctly

For those of you who have a generator on the mountain, I can tell you that the majority have been installed incorrectly and could cause injuries, fire or death. You may want to think I’m lying to get your business, but you can ask anybody from the fire department how serious it is.

I own two units on the mountain and am the owner of Excalibur Electric Ltd.. I have been told a number of times from insurance agencies that ignorance does not warrant them covering you. If your generator is installed incorrectly, and you have been misled by the person who installed it it gives the insurance company grounds to not cover you.

If you are interested, it is free for us to come inspect your generator and ensure that everything is done correctly and safely. Not only for your guests, yourself and family, but also for the home itself. One fire could affect a lot of people on the mountain.

In 2019 – 2023 electrical distribution or lighting equipment, such as wiring, lighting, cords, and plugs, was involved in the ignition of an estimated average of 31,647 reported home structure fires per year. These incidents caused an estimated average 425 civilian deaths, 1,279 civilian injuries, and $1.6B in direct property damage annually. (NFPA Research)

• Have all electrical work done by a qualified electrician.
• When buying or remodeling a home, have it inspected by a qualified private inspector or in accordance with local requirements.
• Only use one heat-producing appliance (such as a coffee maker, toaster, space heater, etc.) plugged into a receptacle outlet at a time.
• Major appliances (refrigerators, dryers, washers, stoves, etc.) should be plugged directly in a wall receptacle outlet. Extensions cords and plug strips should not be used.
• Check electrical cords to make sure they are not running across doorways or under carpets. Extension cords are intended for temporary use.
• Call a qualified electrician or your landlord if you have:
o Frequent problems with blowing fuses or tripping circuit breakers.
o A tingling feeling when you touch an electrical appliance.
o Discolored or warm wall outlets.
o A burning or rubbery smell coming from an appliance.
o Flickering or dimming lights.
o Sparks from an outlet.

We had the pleasure and honor of attending and being recognized as a Professional Service Provider at the Chilliwack Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Awards last night.

Starting a business from scratch is hard. Continuing to keep it running for 25+ years takes a lot of time and work. You do it with hope to provide your family with a decent living and get some of the benefits along the way. This also comes with great challenges.

We’ve always chosen to run our business from the point of view that we can have anything we want in life as long as we help other people get what they want first. I instruct my employees to always educate our customers and homeowners and never pressure them to purchase. I have always found when people are given the correct information they are thankful and find a way to make sure they are safe. Even if they choose not to purchase, we can leave with our heads held high knowing we have at least educated someone in something they may not have known before.

As a company that has always tried to donate to organizations, set high standards, always treat people with respect, and give back to those in need when we can, it is always humbling to be recognized by a community as that is a effect from the results of the efforts we have made.

To lose an award you were nominated for is never a bad thing because it gives you a chance to reflect and improve. You can’t win every time but being recognized by the Chilliwack Chamber of Commerce as a company that supplies excellence to the people in Chillwack is an award all on its own.
