Nova Scotia has over 30,000 private land owners that cover almost 70% of the province. With so much land in private hands, the role of individual landowners in protecting our natural areas is extremely important. And this is true across the country. Canada's private forests cover roughly 23 million hectares which support rural economies, store carbon, offer ecosystem services and biodiversity for wildlife and so much more.

To maintain a current understanding of the goals and perspectives of the people who own and steward these private forests, researchers at McGill University, in partnership with Canadian Forest Owners (CFO) and with support from MITACS Canada, have launched the first national survey of private forest owners in more than 20 years.

The survey aims to build a stronger evidence base to help governments better understand the role private forests play in Canada’s economy, environment, and communities.

The survey can be found through the QR code below or here: www.forestowners.ca/about/survey/
The survey only takes 15 minutes and can be completed on a phone or tablet, but a computer is recommended. The survey closes on September 15th.

Such a great day learning with HRM’s Urban Forestry team. We discussed bank naturalization, tree care and tree climbing, and visited a recent installation of a food forest within view of the MacDonald Bridge! HRM’s Urban Forest takes a lot of care and planning from some amazingly dedicated people facing problems that traditional forestry does not. Thank you for a wonderful event!
