πππ βWHY ARE THERE SO MANY WASPS ON MY PROPERTY?!β πππ
If it suddenly feels like your yard, deck, trees and even your HOUSE have been taken over by wasps...
You are definitely not the only one. π³π
Weβre getting tons of calls right now from people saying:
π± βThere are hundreds of them in my yard!β
π³ βMy tree is COVERED in wasps!β
π βI keep finding wasps inside my house!β
π βTheyβre everywhere! Can you come spray?β
Hereβs the important thing to know π
π This time of year, wasp activity can become VERY noticeable.
Theyβre out searching for food and sugary sources, and you can suddenly see large numbers congregating around properties.
π³ Trees are a perfect example.
Some trees attract huge numbers of wasps because they're feeding on sap or on the sugary honeydew produced by aphids and other sap-feeding insects.
That tree might have hundreds or even thousands of wasps around it without having a wasp nest anywhere in the tree. πππ
You can also see increased activity around:
πΉ Decks & patios
ποΈ Garbage and recycling
π Fruit trees & fallen fruit
πΈ Gardens & vegetation
π Around homes and buildings
π₯€ Anywhere they're finding a food or sugar source
And yes, you may even find the occasional wasp making its way inside your home.
But lots of wasps being present does NOT automatically mean there's a nest on your property.
π¨ FOR US TO TREAT THEM, WE NEED SOMETHING TO ACTUALLY TREAT. π¨
That means we're looking for:
π A visible nest
π³οΈ A ground nest
β‘οΈ Wasps repeatedly entering and exiting the SAME opening
π Consistent activity through siding, soffits, rooflines, cracks or wall openings
If they're simply flying around your property, feeding or passing through, there isn't a colony there for us to eliminate.
π WHEN SHOULD YOU CALL US?
Watch them for a little while. π
If you start seeing wasps repeatedly flying to and from the exact same location, THAT'S what we want to know about.
β‘οΈ Same hole.
β‘οΈ Same crack.
β‘οΈ Same spot under the siding.
β‘οΈ Same area of the roofline.
β‘οΈ Same hole in the ground.
That's a highway leading somewhere. πβ‘οΈπ
If you're finding wasps inside your home, pay attention to where you're finding them and whether there's consistent activity around a particular window, wall, ceiling, vent or exterior opening. That information can help determine whether we're dealing with a colony associated with the structure or simply individual wasps finding their way inside.
πͺ€ WHAT ABOUT WASP TRAPS?
Absolutely, but LOCATION MATTERS!
Put traps toward the far end/property line, away from:
πͺ Doors
π Decks & patios
π Kids' play areas
πΆ Pet areas
πͺ Anywhere you're actually trying to enjoy your yard
Please don't hang a wasp attractant beside your patio table and accidentally open Waspy's Bar & Grill. ππΉπ
β οΈ MOST IMPORTANTLY: PLEASE DON'T TRY TO TREAT A NEST YOURSELF.
π« Don't spray an active nest.
π« Don't plug an entrance.
π« Don't start blasting every wasp you see with over-the-counter products.
Disturbing a colony can result in a LOT of very angry wasps very quickly, putting you, your family, neighbours and pets at risk of multiple stings. ππππ¨
And remember: you can develop an allergic reaction to wasp venom even if you've been stung before without a serious reaction.
π§ͺ Professional pest-control technicians also have access to commercial products, equipment and treatment methods that aren't available to the general public. Many over-the-counter products can repel or scatter activity rather than giving us the residual treatment needed for certain nest situations.
So before declaring war on the backyard with a can of spray and questionable confidence... π¬
Find the traffic. Find the entrance. Then call the professionals. πβ‘οΈπ³οΈπ
And if there are simply hundreds of wasps cruising around your property looking for food?
Unfortunately, sometimes that's just September in Alberta. πππ
