Sudden hole next to a catch basin? You have a washout on your hands.

A washout can happen from deteriorated risers, a cracked pipe underground or a sewer pipe placed into a precast hole that’s too big and patched temporarily - the latter is what happened here.

We saw cut the asphalted area, dug down to reveal the air pocket (see image 3) and created a permanent concrete patch to fill the gap and prevent future washouts from happening again. Then we backfilled the hole, compacting the area with our pneumatic tamper as we brought the grade up, before reinstating the asphalt and improving the area for proper water drainage.

Moments before this happened, a customer of the store had purchased two one of a kind lounge chairs from this business, only to come back an hour later to pick them up and find out that they were destroyed in this accident…😭 Needless to say, this had to be taken care of quickly.

Also, this was the second time this kind of accident had happened to this property in the exact same spot of the building and the insurance company wasn’t going to honour the window repair unless a significant change was made to prevent a future third occurrence. Bollards or small jersey barriers were also recommended by us to appease the insurance company but ultimately the store owners preferred a low profile aesthetic.
