There’s a lot hiding under this playground...

A few things that really matter if you want the tree to take well ⬇️

First, depth matters. The collar of the tree should sit about 2 to 3 inches above finished grade. If it’s planted too deep, you can create problems before the tree even gets started.

The hole should also be wide enough. We want at least 6 inches wider than the wire basket all the way around, so there’s room for good planting soil and proper backfill.

From there, we use rich planting soil and pack it in lifts as we go. That helps with soil-to-root contact and keeps the tree from leaning later.

Last step is creating a bowl around the tree so watering is easier and actually gets down where it needs to go. 🌳

Vertical integration was always the goal! We wanted more control over the trees going into our projects. Cost, quality, availability, and timing.

🌱 So in 2020, we started our own nursery in King City. Now we have another farm in Uxbridge.

These trees will end up in parks, along streets, at entry features, and on trail systems across the GTA.

This year, we dug 1,000 wire basket trees and brought them back to our yard in Markham, where they’ll be maintained and sent out to projects as needed. 🌳

It’s a lot of work behind the scenes, but it gives us more control from the start of a project right through to the finished landscape.

Years ago, we didn’t have track loaders like this.👇

The visibility wasn’t great, and they were honestly a lot more dangerous.

Now they’ve got backup cameras and better visibility, so they’re a lot safer and way more efficient. That’s why we have four of them now.

What’s changed the most in equipment safety since you started?

If you’ve ever taken your kids to a splash pad, you probably weren’t thinking about the drainage underneath it.

Fair enough. 😉 But that’s the kind of work that makes the whole thing function.

The concrete, rebar, curbs, sprayers, controls, and drainage all have to come together before it ever becomes a place families can enjoy.

What was your favourite park feature as a kid?

This is what gets you hired again...

Bigger loads.
Less downtime.
Get through rough terrain.
Dumping on slopes.
Faster dumping.

Just bigger, faster, BETTER. 😏 Do you agree?

Ever wonder why parks cost as much as they do? This is a good example. 👇

It’s the drainage, servicing, water lines, sanitary, irrigation, and all the connections that make the visible features actually function.

A park is a lot more than the stuff you see on opening day. 🛠️

What’s one thing you never thought about until you saw it being built?

Every fall, squirrels bury acorns to save for later.

The funny part is, they don’t always remember where they put them. Some of those forgotten acorns end up sprouting, taking root, and turning into oak trees over time. 🐿️

So while we’re out here seeding and planting with a plan, squirrels are quietly doing their own little reforestation job in the background. 🌱

A good reminder for that nature has been doing this work long before us.

Did you know squirrels helped plant oak trees?
