Accent Building Sciences is a Canadian engineering firm with 3 decades of building science experience with large, complex projects in both the public and private sector. Founded in 1997, our professional team helps property managers and building owners replace or repair building envelope systems (roofs, walls, windows, balconies) before a failure in the system leads to costly repairs. ABSI has bee

n solving building sciences challenges for municipalities, property managers and building owners across Ontario through services that include:
• Roof and building envelope consulting;
• Design, and construction management of the design; and
• Complete building condition assessment and reserve fund study. The firm pioneered the discipline of quality control in the building sciences industry, and shaped the standards by which quality roofing consulting is judged. What a fantastic few days at the 𝗔𝗠𝗢 𝗔𝗻𝗻𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 in Ottawa

From the opening keynote to sessions on municipal procurement, asset management, and strengthening relationships between First Nations and municipalities, it was a privilege to connect with municipal leaders, partners, and clients from across Ontario.

A few highlights:

Great to meet 𝗠𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗲𝗹 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘀𝗮, Ontario's Minister of Children, Community and Social Services, and to connect with Whitby councilor, Matt Cardwell.

What a fantastic few days at the 𝗔𝗠𝗢 𝗔𝗻𝗻𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 in Ottawa

Wonderful to catch up with Sarah Craig from PSD Citywide, one of our valued affiliates, great to meet in person, and always great to strengthen partnerships that move our communities forward.

And of course, sharing the experience with my colleague Zack Salman made it all the more memorable.

A huge thank you to the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) for putting together such a well-run and worthwhile conference. The organization, the sessions, and the connections were second to none.

We had the pleasure of taking part in the Federation of Rental-housing Providers of Ontario (FRPO) Annual Charity Golf Tournament in support of Interval House, whose proceeds go toward shelter and support for abused women and children, a cause well worth showing up for.

A sincere thank you to the organizers for a wonderful run day. Bob winning the signed jersey was a fun bonus, and we’re grateful to Melissa for sharing our photo at Legends #1. A great day for a great cause.

𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐢𝐫 𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞, 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐞𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐢𝐫 𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐭𝐞𝐫.

Ontario is heading into its second heat event of the summer this week, and this time it comes with wildfire smoke drifting down from Quebec and air quality warnings across the province. Heat, humidity, and smoke at once put a different kind of load on a building, not on the roof and flashing, but on how tightly the envelope seals and how well the mechanical systems manage what gets inside.

A leaky envelope doesn't just cost you on cooling. On days like these, it pulls unfiltered outdoor air and the smoke particulate riding along with it straight into the spaces your occupants breathe. The buildings that stay comfortable and healthy this week aren't lucky. They're the ones where air tightness, ventilation, and filtration were designed to work together.

If your building felt stuffy, smoky, or hard to keep cool during the last stretch of weather, that's worth understanding before the next event arrives. Indoor air quality and envelope performance are two sides of the same assessment and knowing where you stand now beats reacting later.

𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐩𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐤'𝐬 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐞𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐝𝐧'𝐭 𝐚𝐬𝐤 𝐟𝐨𝐫.

Ontario just went through days of orange heat warnings, humidex near 46°C, and severe storms that knocked out power to over 160,000 Hydro One customers. That combination, extreme heat, humidity, and wind-driven rain, is exactly what exposes weaknesses in a building's envelope: failing seals, compromised flashing, and roofing systems that were "fine" until they weren't.

Extreme weather like this doesn't cause building envelope failures, it reveals them. If your roof, windows, or cladding had a hidden vulnerability, this is the week it likely showed up as a leak, a moisture intrusion, or a spike in cooling costs.
