Only one month until National Forest Week (NFW) 2026!

In Canada, NFW 2026 takes place from September 20–26 under the official theme "Forest Pathways: Innovation and Sustainability". This annual public awareness campaign, coordinated nationally by the Canadian Institute of Forestry (CIF-IFC), highlights how science and modern technology shape the sustainable future of Canada's vast forest ecosystems.

During NFW, NFMC hosts its annual photo contest for residents within our management area. Enter for a chance to win a $100 VISA gift card! Stay tuned for more information in our future posts.

How to Get Involved during NFW:

Individuals, families, and schools can participate in several structured national activities:

1. Creative Contests: The CIF-IFC hosts an official national photo contest, a youth drawing contest focused on healthy forest landscapes, and a poetry competition.

2. Digital Advocacy: Use the official hashtag to share your local greening events, hikes, and educational materials online.

3. Community Initiatives: Local groups can find toolkits and design inspirations on provincial hubs like BC National Forest Week to organize municipal forest cleanups and nature presentations.

NFMC's Marathon Tree Restoration Project for 2026 is now complete!

🌳✨Three years ago, NFMC began a partnership with Jim and Brenda Collins of Jack Pine Tree Care Services and Mahsa Shidva, owner of Marathon Canadian Tire, to launch a local tree restoration project right here in Marathon.

We are excited to share that a total of 54 trees have now been planted!🌱

Spring 2024 (15 Trees): 6 at Peninsula Manor (Marathon Senior Supportive Housing) and 9 for the Marathon Community Flowerbed Program.

Spring 2025 (29 Trees): 7 at Veteran's Square, 1 at Marathon Town Hall, 19 at Peninsula Manor, and 2 for the Marathon Community Flowerbed Program.

Spring 2026 (10 Trees) : 2 at Veterans square, 8 at Peninsula Manor.

To further support local business, NFMC purchased a variety of tree species directly from Marathon Canadian Tire. Jim and Brenda Collins expertly planted them across the community, selecting the perfect varieties for each location:

📍 Where to find the new growth:
Veteran's Square: Mugo Pine, Trembling Aspen, Sugar Maple, Silver Maple, Red Prince Weigela and Cedar.

Marathon Town Hall: Silver Queen Maple.

Peninsula Manor: Mugo Pine, Paper Birch, Trembling Aspen, Red Prince Weigela, Red Maple, Crab Apple, Swedish Columnar Aspen, White Pine, and Green Spire Linden.

Marathon Community Flowerbed Program: Paper Birch.

You might notice green satchels at the base of the trees. Jim and Brenda added these specialized watering bags to provide supplemental drip irrigation, helping the roots establish during this crucial early growth phase. He also installed bark protectors to keep the young trees safe.

A big shout out and thank you to Mahsa and Jim for their incredible support throughout this entire process. Amazing work on the tree planting, Jim and Brenda! 🌲💪

Over the past week, Team NFMC was busy collecting data within forestry blocks to help identify dominant tree species, age, and size.

The specific branch of forestry that deals with identifying tree species, measuring dimensions, and determining age to assess forest composition is called forest inventory.

Forestry Practices Include:

Forest Inventory: The systematic collection of data on the quantity, species makeup, and condition of trees across a forest area.

Forest Mensuration: The specific sub-discipline focused on measuring tree diameter, height, volume, and age. To determine age, NFMC used an increment borer to obtain core samples, from which the rings were then counted.

Stand Typing / Forest Cover Typing: Classifying and mapping forest areas based on their dominant tree species, size classes, and age structures.

Dendrology: The scientific identification and study of woody plants and tree species.
