Ever wondered how plants can grow by sitting in water? The magic of hydroponics is to add plant food to the water.

Think of your little seedlings like babies: according to their age you provide the right food and amount to your kids. We do the same thing for our plants. From the first moment they come out of their tiny seed to the fully harvested plant we provide the right mix to our plants.

Unlike soil farming, where fertilizers can be wasted or washed away, in hydroponics we make sure that the nutrients are fully absorbed by the plants. So we add only the amount of nutrients the plants really need to make sure are plants are not starving or become overweight.

Big parsley harvest! We're making room for the next crop, basil. There's still enough sunlight and warmth to grow this sun-loving crop. It grows quickly and yields more when you continuously harvest the first leaves. We use only first-year parsley and recommend deep freezing or making pesto with it.🌿😀

Hydroponics is often seen as a method mainly for growing leafy greens — especially in large installations supporting food security in places like Japan, Singapore, the UAE, India, the Philippines, and here in Canada. But hydroponic growing is so much more.
It opens the door to a powerful form of urban gardening:
• fresh vegetables all year round,
• compact systems for small spaces,
• and even new possibilities for growing flowering plants.
Many vegetables rely on active pollinators to turn blossoms into the fruits and vegetables we enjoy. With that in mind — and inspired by Maple Ridge Earth Day — we launched our first biodiversity project using native plant seeds from the event.
Growing Shasta Daisy, River Daisy, and Rock Cress hydroponically was new even for us. We adapted a standard hydroponic device for outdoor use and followed our vegetable nutrient protocol.
When the flowers bloomed, the results were immediate: Common Eastern Bumble Bees arrived, along with a few yellow jacket bees. Seeing native plants attract their natural pollinators — even in a hydroponic setup — was incredibly encouraging.

Our tomatoes are still ripening on the vine, longing for the last late summer sun rays to break down the solanine (green color) so they can turn red with sweetness. This year we're using heirloom tomatoes that turn a chocolatey colour.

Attention lettuce lovers! Urban gardens work best as a combination of indoor and outdoor growing. Combining our lettuce with male zucchini flowers in a salad bowl is not only delicious, but also food for the eye 😋

We 3D printed new covers for the empty spaces on our hydroponics towers. Leaving empty spaces gives the other plants more space for their roots and the covers make sure no water is lost to evaporation.

1.5lbs of Tomatoes in the first harvest!
Ripe and very sweet. Hydroponics does the magic and ripens tomatoes earlier. While other gardeners harvest green ones and let them ripen inside away from the rain, we can harvest continuously. It is a new variety turning in a chocolatey color while ripening. What tomatoes are you growing?
