This week was our final garden tour for this summer when we visited Simon and Jill’s garden. Many of us have driven by their home and seen their extensive vegetable garden and so it was most interesting to go inside the fence and see the amazing variety of vegetables that they are growing. This includes a 'Three Sisters garden ’which is a Native American companion planting method that grows corn, pole beans, and squash together. The corn supports the beans, the beans fix nitrogen in the soil, and the squash acts as living mulch to suppress weeds.

On a beautiful August evening members toured a delightful property, located in a cove on Second Penninsula.
In March 2024 the property landscape was in a blank neglected state. The overhaul of the landscape began early in spring of 2024 as approximately 8 deer were visiting! The first step was hardscaping with rock placement, a driveway, walkways and exterior permanent planters. The plants selected were considered deer resistant plants. The garden has continued to evolve over the past 3 years and the addition of a fence was required in an attempt to redirect deer from devouring everything they “ supposedly” do not like. Thank you to Annette for welcoming us to her colourful garden.

The judges from Communities in Bloom have just wrapped up their three day visit evaluating our Town.
Here they are at the end of their time with the CiB team for Mahone Bay at the home of Cathy Gregoire where they stayed. Lucky judges! They were Larry Hall from Saskatchewan (second from right) and Susan Ellis from Ontario (fourth from left, front row) In spite of the rain they were able to see everything we had planned for them and meet all the amazing people that contribute to our Town.In a few weeks we will receive our evaluation and know how well we did.

This week we visited an old farm in Martins River. The property was originally in a family for four generations and was acquired by the current owner’s family in 1984. The scenic pastures were transformed into a more cultivated but naturalistic landscape.
As beekeepers, they wanted to ensure there was always something in bloom. Forsythia, magnolia, and quince for early flowers were planted, followed by crab apple, viburnum, burning bush, honeysuckle, hydrangea, painted kiwi, climbing roses and many others. Many remain to this day.
Since 2012, our garden tour hosts, John and Pamela have transformed the property gardens by building a terrace of raised vegetable beds and planting more fruit trees and shrubs. In 2022, they added a greenhouse to extend the growing season.

This week members of the Mahone Bay Garden Club enjoyed visiting three gardens in Indian Point. Thank you to Helen, Carol and Norrie, for welcoming us to your seaside gardens. We all enjoyed your colourful and interesting gardens on a beautiful summer evening.
