Heat Pumps 101: Just how noisy is a heat pump, really?

Short answer: not very! Most heat pumps today use inverter technology, letting the fan adjust anywhere from 20% up to full speed instead of just blasting on and off. That means they can run a lot quieter than you'd expect.

Sound levels vary by brand, features, and sizing, but generally, outdoor units run around 50-55 decibels, while indoor units can be as quiet as 20 decibels. About the same as light traffic outside, a fan humming in another room, or your fridge running in the kitchen.

So if noise has been holding you back from making the switch, it might be time to reconsider! Questions about your setup?

Heat Pumps 101: Furnace vs. Boiler vs. Heat Pump. What's the real difference?

They all keep your home comfortable, but each one gets the job done in a completely different way!

A furnace burns fossil fuel to generate heat, then relies on a heat exchanger and blower to push that warm air through your home. A boiler takes a different approach entirely, heating water and circulating it through baseboards or in-floor piping to warm the space. A heat pump works differently again, cooling a refrigerant that runs through a coil to deliver either heat or cool air, depending on what your home needs.

Same goal, three very different processes! If you're weighing your options and not sure which system fits your home best, visit wilsonsmechanical.ca to book a free consultation.

Heat Pumps 101: Heating and cooling more than one zone?

Got a multi-level home and wondering how to keep every floor comfortable? Our comfort specialist walks us through the options.

If you go with a central forced-air system, it'll heat and cool wherever your ductwork reaches, and depending on how that ductwork is designed, different floors can even be zoned separately so you can control the temperature on each one independently.🌡

Mini-splits work a little differently. Since each indoor unit (often called a "head") is sized for the space it covers, you'd typically want one per floor to keep comfort consistent throughout your home.

Whichever route makes more sense really comes down to your home's layout and your comfort goals. 📊🏠

Heat Pumps 101: Will I need an electrical upgrade?

The answer really comes down to what's already on your panel. The safest bet? Have a qualified technician run a load demand assessment, especially if you're not sure what your panel can handle. Sizes vary a lot from home to home.🔌

🏠The good news: most homes can add a mini split without a hitch. But if you're swapping out a furnace for a central heat pump with electric backup, an upgrade is often needed for smaller services. And here's the part people forget: things like hot tubs and EV chargers count toward your panel's load too, even if they're never running at the same time as your heat pump!

Heat Pumps 101: Why is my heat pump getting noisier?

If your heat pump has started making more noise lately, you're not alone. The good news is, it's usually something we can fix! In this video, our sales consultant breaks down the most common reasons:

🌀 Dirty filters: Skipping maintenance and letting filters get clogged is one of the biggest culprits behind a noisier indoor unit.
🔧 Wear and tear: A broken fan or a part needing repair can also be the cause. This is where a service call comes in handy.
❄️ Defrost cycles: During defrost, the indoor unit naturally expands and contracts as refrigerant temperature changes, which can cause a bit of sound. Totally normal!

Staying on top of regular maintenance is the easiest way to keep your system running smoothly (and quietly) all season long.

Heat Pump 101: Should I leave my heat pump running 24/7 or should I turn it on and off throughout the day?

It might seem like turning your heat pump off when you don't need it would save energy, but that's not necessarily the case.

Our HVAC consultant explains why keeping your heat pump running and maintaining a consistent temperature can be a more efficient way to heat and cool your home.🌡🏠

Frequently turning your system on and off can make it work harder to bring your home back to the temperature you want.

Heat Pump 101:
Can a heat pump improve the air quality in my home?

Yes, depending on the type of system, brand, and filtration options available, a heat pump can offer different levels of air filtration, from basic filtration to options designed to capture more particles, reduce odours, or help with allergens.

💡 The right filtration option depends on your system and your home’s needs.
