This is such a hard post to make.

Paul isn’t able to work anymore. The motorcycle accident he had 10 months ago has left him with chronic pain, cognitive impairments, and he can only stand for about 5 minutes before needing to sit or lean. The orthopaedic specialist has told him not to lift anything heavy, mentioning full grocery bags as an example.

His cognitive impairments have improved enough that he can now read lyrics, so he has resumed singing with his friend Ryk’s praise team (Rev Ryk’s church is in Hamilton). Not every Sunday, as gas is expensive and we haven’t yet replaced Paul’s income. Paul has also picked his bass guitar back up and has begun playing with the praise team too. This is therapeutic as well, as his muscle memory from playing for over 40 years will help his brain forge new neuro pathways as he relearns how to play.

Picture: a visit this morning with our G’Boi (nicknamed Bug), and his new rescue kitten (Porridge). Off screen is our daughter Angel and their puppy (Toast). Bug brought his guitar down so he could strum a song for us.

Paul is recommending 2 different small companies owned by friends of his:

Today it has been 5 weeks since Paul’s motorcycle accident. He is slowly improving, but we don’t know how long his recovery will take.

This morning we returned to the church we attend, which is in Waterdown Ontario. Ryk, Paul’s best friend since they were 5 years old, is the minister there. In September 2022 we headed there with another longtime friend, Matt, as we were all going to ride their motorcycles after the service. Paul and I enjoyed listening to Ryk so much that we headed back the next few Sundays. The church and community are very accepting and inclusive, as you can see by the screenshot I took at the beginning of their welcome this morning. They didn’t care that we showed up in our bike leathers. They didn’t care that we didn’t share their christian beliefs. We discovered we all shared the same sense of caring for and helping others, and creating a sense of community.

After our son Mattryk passed away in October 2022, our therapist told us to plan something each week that we could look forward to. One of those things was heading to St James, listening to Ryk, and often having lunch with him after the service. When the praise team asked Paul to join them singing in September 2023, they were fully aware he didn’t share their beliefs, but he was more than happy to help them generate energy, as he loves to sing.

Today Paul was welcomed back by everyone, and we lucked out to be rejoining them on their bbq/potluck luncheon day! We even came home with supper, as one of the ladies, Jane, knew we were coming and she had brought us a large chicken pot pie and made us a loaf cake to take home!

Paul spent his time there today in his wheelchair, and he slept most of the ride home, but we had a lovely time seeing everyone again.

There have been many inquiries about Paul’s recovery from his motorcycle accident 4 weeks ago, so I thought I’d post a wee update.

His recovery is going to be slow. We aren’t certain yet if he will be able to do closings this year, but we hope that’s going to be a possibility. He can’t walk without the support of a walker yet, and while his pain meds help, he always has a level of pain from his fractures. I am able to get him out and about occasionally using my late mother’s travel wheelchair.

Today we had the support of our children and 2 former employees, and it was the hardest thing ever for Paul to just sit and watch and supervise. He’s always been a “don’t ask someone to do something you aren’t willing to do yourself” kind of employer, but he wasn’t able to do that today, and he really disliked just telling them what to do next and not be helping them!

Just before his accident Paul had measured a pool to put a new liner in, and we were awaiting the liner being made. We have always been a small family business, but today we had the largest crew ever putting in a liner. Our son Adair, our daughter Angel, our best friends’ daughter Abbey, who worked with us 2 years ago (and who calls us Mum and Dad), and my cousin Keith (not pictured) who worked with Paul for a couple seasons several years ago. Paul supervised, and I had the hard task of keeping him in his wheelchair!!

They did a fantastic job preparing the pool, and dropping the liner. We are so thankful to have so many supportive people in our lives.

I’ve deleted yesterday’s post about Paul’s motorcycle accident, as I didn’t want the post to negatively affect our future legal options.

He’s in hospital, and being well looked after. Thank you for your support.

I’ve cancelled all jobs for this week and given those customers the number of a friend/company who has availability to open pools. I haven’t looked beyond this week yet. We are uncertain about if/when Paul will be returning to work, but hopeful recovery will allow him to resume work. It’s too early for definite answers yet.

Paul has some requests for our customers. I think these are reasonable requests. The photo is just one I grabbed off the internet, rather than using a picture any of the sheds he has had to deal with so far this season.

Request 1: Please clear out your kids’ bikes, your pool furniture, and anything else you have buried your pool equipment under in your pool shed. Starting tomorrow, Paul will move onto the next job if he can’t reach your equipment, and we will need to reschedule you when he next has space to fit you in. We have a few spots next week, and then his next availability is after Victoria Day.

Request 2: If you have dogs, please clean up after them. If there is 💩 on your pool cover, pool deck, or where they have to walk to reach the pool and the pool equipment, he will move onto the next job and we will need to reschedule you. We understand there may be the odd dog bomb from this morning when you let them out, but some backyards still have the accumulation of the entire winter of letting the dogs out. This request starts today, as it’s a health issue and not just a time/nuisance issue like a cluttered pool shed.

If you are scheduled for this week and don’t have time to do either of those things before your opening, please message and we will try to move you to next week. We only have a few spots left next week, though.

It’s the busiest time of the season for Paul! It’s 5:45pm, and I’ve joined him after my hospital shift ended to help him finish up his work day. Unfortunately our son Adair has been off work this week, on antibiotics for a serious infection, and that’s making Paul and Angel’s days a little bit more difficult.
Tonight we are draining a pool and cutting out the liner to measure it, and then we have a couple service calls to make before we can go home for supper.

There’s still time to get a new liner in this year, so message us if you’d like a quote!

It’s April Fools Day, but this post isn’t a prank.

It’s been a long time since I’ve posted. Paul and I have been gentle with ourselves since our son Mattryk’s death, and posting on Paul’s business page wasn’t something I felt like doing.

But pool season is now here! Warm weather is coming! If you look at the forecast for next week, the high for 6 days is 15° or higher!!

It’s time to book your pool opening if you haven’t already.

Text 519-933-8236 or click the “message” button further up our FB page, and give us an idea of when you’d like it opened (ie beginning of April or May, end of April, after Victoria Day, etc).

Price this year is again $285 plus tax.

Now is also a good time to have Paul give you a liner quote if you need a new inground liner this year.

I have been picking up my G’Boi from kindergarten this week as his Mama (our daughter Angel) has been working with Paul and Adair closing pools and installing new safety covers. Yesterday we met them at their last job and he got to help out for 15 minutes as they finished up.

Next generation in training!

A year ago today our world changed forever with the death of our youngest son Mattryk. It’s been a very difficult year for us, and we’ve been very gentle with ourselves. We thank all of our customers who have been patient with our delayed responses, as some days communication is beyond us as we grieve.

Today we celebrated our fun-loving and mischievous eternal 17 year old by supplying family and friend with stickers. This had originally been Mattryk’s idea, and although we never got to do it with him, we did it for him.

Below are a few of the photos we and others took today, and more are still being posted on social media using the hashtag

If you search FB and Instagram for that hashtag, you will be able to see his friends and family sharing their excursions today.

Note: we removed stickers from items intended for children, and the rest we put on higher shelved items.
