This Thanksgiving, we’re grateful for the people who make Bre-Ex what it is: our crews, our team behind the scenes, our partners and the communities that trust us to help build what comes next.

As a busy construction continues, we’re especially thankful for the effort and teamwork that go into every project.

You may have seen our crews in more places than you realize.

With work now underway on Phase 2B of the Wellington Gateway, we've been part of 11 of the 16 construction phases that make up London’s Rapid Transit network.

Our latest work takes us along Wellington Road from Watson Street to Base Line Road East. With this latest phase, we'll continue the transformation of the Wellington corridor with road reconstruction and widening, dedicated rapid transit lanes and stations, underground infrastructure upgrades, and improvements for pedestrians and cyclists.

It’s the latest piece of a much bigger story.

From the East London Link and Downtown Loop to multiple phases of the Wellington Gateway, our crews have helped build the infrastructure that will keep London moving as our city continues to grow.

It takes a lot more than an excavator to build a road. 🚧🫡

When you pass a Bre-Ex jobsite, you see the operators, equipment and crews getting the work done.

What you don’t always see are the people working behind the scenes to keep everything moving.

Estimators putting the numbers together. Project managers coordinating schedules, crews and materials. Accounting keeping projects on track. Administrators supporting the details that keep the whole operation running.

Every role plays a part in getting a project from plans on a page to infrastructure our communities rely on every day.

Repair, resurface or reconstruct – what's the difference? 🚧

Not every road showing its age needs the same solution.

🔧 Repair

When the issue is localized, crews can address specific areas like potholes, cracks or damaged sections without rebuilding the entire road.

🛣️ Resurface

When the road surface has deteriorated but the infrastructure underneath is still in good condition, the existing asphalt can be removed and replaced to give the road a new driving surface.

🚧 Reconstruct

When the problems go deeper, it’s time for a more extensive rebuild. Reconstruction can involve removing the existing roadway, rebuilding its foundation and replacing aging underground infrastructure like watermains and sewers.

How municipalities decide which approach is needed depends on the condition of both the road you can see, and the infrastructure you can't.

Different problems call for different solutions. The goal is always the same: infrastructure that performs safely and reliably for the long term. And that's what we're here to build

Safety isn’t just another item on our checklist. It’s something we keep working at. 👷‍♂️

Keeping our people safe has always been a non-negotiable part of how we work.

That’s why we participate in the WSIB Health and Safety Excellence program – an ongoing program designed to help Ontario businesses strengthen their health and safety practices, identify opportunities for improvement and build safer workplaces.

Through the program, we work with safety experts to assess our practices, develop action plans, and continually strengthen the policies and procedures that help protect our team.

Because on a construction site, doing things the right way matters. This means:

👉 Planning before the work begins.

👉 Speaking up when something doesn't look right.

👉 Learning from experience.

👉 Making sure everyone understands that they have a role to play in keeping themselves and the people around them safe.

For us, “family business” means more than our last name.

Bre-Ex has been family-owned for more than 60 years, incorporating in 1964, with three generations of the Brekelmans family helping shape the company along the way.

But look across our team today, and you'll find that multi-generational spirit goes well beyond ownership.

There are family connections throughout Bre-Ex — fathers and sons, siblings, relatives and people who have introduced the next generation to an industry they’ve built their own careers in.

And there’s something pretty special about that.

When someone chooses to recommend Bre-Ex to a family member, or when the next generation decides this is a place where they can build a career too, we don't take that for granted.

It means experience gets shared. Knowledge gets passed down. And the culture we've built continues through the people who know it best.

Labour Day has been recognized in Canada for more than 130 years, and it's a day rooted in honouring and celebrating workers and the contributions they make to our communities.

For us, that hits close to home.

Every site prepared, road built, pipe installed, and project completed is made possible by hardworking people who show up every day and take pride in doing the job right.

Today, we recognize our own Bre-Ex team and all the skilled tradespeople, operators, labourers, drivers, supervisors and industry partners who help build and maintain the communities we call home.

Thank you for the work you do, the skills you bring, and the communities you help build.

$294 billion. That’s the estimated cost of renewing Canada’s existing core public infrastructure.

That's a big number, and it represents something we all rely on every day.

Roads. Bridges. Watermains. Sewers. Transit systems. Much of the infrastructure that keeps our communities running was built decades ago, and maintaining it is an ongoing job.

According to a recent report from Statistics Canada, owners of Canada’s core public infrastructure estimated that $294.4 billion was needed to rehabilitate or replace existing assets to maintain or bring them into good condition.

At $160.8 billion, more than half of that need is tied to transportation infrastructure, including roads, bridges, tunnels, transit and active transportation networks.

It’s an important reminder that infrastructure investment isn't only about building something new.

It's also about taking care of what we've already built, like replacing aging systems, extending the life of critical assets, and making sure our communities have infrastructure they can depend on for decades to come.

Who decides when a road gets reconstructed? 🚧

Spoiler: it’s not the construction company.

Long before Bre-Ex equipment arrives on site, the city of London and its surrounding municipalities are working behind the scenes to determine where infrastructure investment is needed most.

That process can include:

👉 Assessing the condition and age of roads, watermains, sewers and other infrastructure.

👉 Identifying future community and development needs.

👉 Prioritizing projects and securing funding through municipal budgets.

👉 Completing engineering, design and project planning.

👉 Tendering the project to qualified contractors.

That’s where companies like Bre-Ex come in.

Once a project is awarded, our job is to take those plans and build them – coordinating crews, equipment, materials, schedules and site conditions to turn an engineered design into infrastructure the community can rely on.

So, when you see our equipment arrive on your street, the project has likely been years in the making.

We’re proud to play our part in bringing those plans to life and building stronger communities across Southwestern Ontario.

When you see equipment on site, you're only seeing part of the story.

Before a machine gets to work, there's a lot happening behind the scenes.

✔️ Routine maintenance in the shop.

✔️ Safe transport to the jobsite.

✔️ Daily inspections before work begins.

✔️ Fueling and regular servicing.

✔️ Skilled operators at the controls.

✔️ Cleaning and maintenance at the end of the day.

It's all part of keeping our equipment operating safely, efficiently, and ready to perform.

At Bre-Ex, our fleet is one of our greatest assets, but it's the people behind it who make the difference. From our mechanics to our operators, every member of the team plays a role in keeping projects moving.
