After a summer off, your furnace may greet you with a slight dusty smell as it heats up for the first time. As the photo explains, that can be normal, but a strong or lingering burning smell deserves attention.

I haven’t been able to share as many of our installs lately, but I’m out on site in London today with Eric and Craig!

They’re installing a Carrier Infinity modulating furnace paired with a Carrier Infinity high efficiency cold climate heat pump. It’s a great setup to keep this family comfortable through our hot summers and cold Ontario winters.

Thanks to Eric and Craig for the care they put into every install, and to Chris and Kathy for trusting Peter Inch & Associates with their home.

Happy First Day of Fall!

The cooler weather is coming, and now is the perfect time to make sure your home and heating system are ready. A little preparation now can help prevent an unexpected no-heat call on the first really cold night!

Here are 7 simple things to do before the cold weather arrives:

1 Test your furnace early - Turn up the thermostat and let your furnace run before you actually need it. Make sure it starts, heats properly and there are no unusual noises or smells.

2 Change your furnace filter - A clean filter helps maintain airflow, efficiency and indoor air quality.

3 Get ready for drier winter air - If you have a whole-home humidifier, check the water panel and make sure it's ready for heating season.

4 Schedule a professional furnace tune-up - Preventative maintenance can identify potential problems before they leave you without heat.

5 Change the batteries - Replace the batteries in your thermostat, smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors and test them while you're at it.

6 Check your outdoor vents - Make sure furnace intake and exhaust pipes are clear of leaves, debris and anything else that could restrict airflow. Remember to keep them clear of snow throughout the winter too.

7 Check your registers and return-air grilles - Make sure they're open and aren't blocked by furniture, rugs or other items so your heating system can move air properly throughout your home.

A little preparation this fall can go a long way toward keeping your family warm and comfortable all winter.
