Happy Hump Day! 🐪 If you listen closely, you can hear Friday whispering motivational thoughts in the distance.

🌱Today's trivia:
What native North American wildflower has club-shaped blue flowers that stay tightly closed, relying mainly on bumblebees to pry them open for pollination?

🌱Answer to yesterday's trivia:
What shiny yellow wildflower shares its scientific name with the Latin word for 'little frog'?

Buttercups (Ranunculus) include both native to North America and nonnative invasive species, from the family ranunculaceae. Native varieties are beneficial to local ecosystems, while introduced species, like the Creeping buttercup from Europe, Asia, and northwestern Africa, can be highly invasive and problematic in my garden. I am slowly irriaticating it.
All buttercups are toxic if consumed, by animals and humans.

Buttercups evoke childhood memories of sunny days and the nostalgic game of checking if someone "liked butter" by holding the blooms under their chin.

What is the classic summer flower that grows up to 3 feet tall and requires clump division every 2-3 years for optimal health?

The Shasta Daisy (Leucanthemum × superbum) is a classic summer flower from the Asteraceae family, known for its vibrant appearance, is a man-made hybrid. Daisies are not native to North America.

While edible in small amounts, it has a strong, bitter flavor and can cause digestive or skin irritation if consumed excessively.
Used as a decorative garnish on salads or desserts.
Young leaves can be chopped but have a pungent, bitter taste.

I've got two huge patches of daisies in my garden. They are stunning when they are blooming. I usually cut them all back when they are done. This photo is from my garden.

What mallow family plant is named for its soft, heart-shaped leaves that resemble a specific plush fabric?

The velvet-leaf mallow (Allowissadula holosericea), from the mallow family (Malvaceae), has large, velvety leaves.
Introduced to North America before 1750 for fiber, this invasive species grows rapidly, produces many long-lasting seeds, and aggressively competes with crops and native plants for resources.

various uses:

▪ Stems provide strong bast fiber for ropes, cloth, fishing nets, paper, and boat caulk.
▪ Dried stems and seed pods are used in floral arrangements.
▪ In Traditional Chinese Medicine, it treats fevers, dysentery, stomachaches, and eye injuries.
▪ Crushed leaves serve as a lubricant or poultice for skin irritations and wounds.
▪ Young seeds are edible, either raw or processed for flour and oil.
Young leaves can be cooked as wild greens, though considered low-quality.

I will always remember the first time I saw this tall plant with soft, velvety leaves and a beautiful flower. I wanted to keep it.

Creeping charlie, or ground ivy (Glechoma hederacea), belongs to the mint family and was spread globally by European settlers. It has become an invasive w**d in parts of North America, making it difficult to control due to its extensive root system. While herbicides are commonly used, they have drawbacks.
Ground ivy is edible; young leaves and stems have a mild flavor and can be used in herbal teas or added to cooked dishes like soups and stews.

Ground ivy has a rich history in traditional European and Chinese herbal medicine, primarily used to treat respiratory, digestive, and inflammatory issues.
