Yarrow

Yarrow has quickly become my favourite filler, and I did not plan to plant any in my garden last year! After moving last April, I found yarrow growing abundantly on a path we walked daily taking us to the woods. I often walked in the late evening back out to grab a few to finish off my bouquets, not wanting to take too much from its natural habitat.

Later in the summer, we were busy enough to have not mowed our lawn for some time. Lucky for me - yarrow was growing in our front yard! I quickly transplanted the plants into my garden before they could be accidentally mowed again. I can already see the yarrow growing back in the garden where I had tucked them last year ☺️

This year we are growing:
Yarrow White & Pink - transplanted from our yard 2022
Yarrow Favourite Berries - from seed 2023
Yarrow Strawberry Seduction - a highly discounted 10” plant I bought from CT last fall, divided, and planted out before the snow came!

Not only is yarrow pretty to look at, it is an incredibly useful herb with it’s anti-inflammatory properties. It will prove to have multiple uses in our garden this coming year!

Land Acknowledgment

It is important to acknowledge that the land on which we live, laugh and grow is stolen land. This land belongs to the Anishinabewaki ᐊᓂᔑᓈᐯᐗᑭ, Mississauga, and Attiwonderonk (Neutral) people. The native language of this land is Ojibwe, which includes 5 dialects, all of which can be understood by the other.

The land was part of Treaty 29 (Huron), 1827 where ‘the Majesty, being desirous of appropriating to the purposes of cultivation and settlement a tract of land possessed and inhabited by a part of the Chippewa Nation of Indians…. They should surrender the said tract of land and the possession and the right of possession heretofore enjoyed by them in the same to His Majesty, His heirs and successors’.

This land was taken. We will consistently commemorate the history of this land, and will treat the land with respect, continuing to be grateful for its provisions everyday.

To learn about the history of the land you live on, we encourage you to visit www.native-land.ca.

Treaty 29, 1827: “Whereas, His Majesty being desirous of appropriating to the purposes of cultivation and settlement a tract of land hereinafter particularly described, lying within the limits of the Western District and District of London, in the Province of Upper Canada, and heretofore possessed and inhabited by a part of the Chippewa Nation of Indians, it was proposed to the Chiefs and Principal Men of the said Indians at a Council assembled for that purpose at Amherstburg, in the said Western District, on the twenty-sixth day of April, in the year of Our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty-five, that they should surrender the said tract of land and the possession and the right of possession heretofore enjoyed by them in the same to His Majesty, His heirs and successors, for such recompense to be made by Hi Majesty to the said Nation of Indians as should at the said Council be agreed upon”.

Snapdragons

Our tiny snapdragon seedlings have begun to grow. Starting out as a seed as small and fragile as a grain of sand, flourishing into tall, colourful stacks of blooms that bring awesome height and texture to any bouquet. Cut and come again (and again, and again) - the gift that just keeps giving!

This year we’re hoping to produce:
Snapdragon Rocket Mix
Snapdragon Potomac Lavender
Snapdragon Potomac Appleblossom (super excited for this one)!

What I’ve learned from last year:
We live in a wind tunnel. It is very windy here, everyyy day. This year I am taking plant supports seriously to avoid angled or broken blooms, and to add strength and length to the stems! Last year the Snapdragons fared well in the wind with some support, being at the northeast end of the garden. This year I will double net them for some extra protection! 🌱

October 29 and our first ‘real’ frost ❄️

I don’t even think I would consider this a heavy frost yet, and it’s almost November! Fall 2023 I hope to keep the momentum going with bouquets into October - how dreamy! I may have already ordered 95% of my seeds for next year too…
