Did someone call for your hollow stem?

But what exactly is hollow-stem auger drilling, and why do we use it?

A hollow-stem auger is a drilling system designed with a hollow center and spiral flights on the outside. As the auger rotates, the flights carry soil cuttings up and out of the borehole. The hollow center also allows sampling equipment to be lowered through the auger without having to remove the entire auger string.

So, why use hollow stem?

🔹 Soil sampling – Sampling tools can be run through the hollow center to collect information about the soils at different depths.

🔹 Helps prevent borehole collapse – The hollow auger can act as temporary casing while drilling through loose or unstable soils.

🔹 Monitoring wells – Monitoring wells can be installed through the center of the auger before the augers are pulled from the ground.

🔹 Less reliance on drilling fluids – Hollow-stem augering can often be performed without drilling fluids, which is particularly useful for environmental and groundwater investigations.

🔹 Efficient in the right ground conditions – Hollow-stem augers are commonly used in unconsolidated soils such as sands, silts and clays, although the actual depth and performance depend on the ground conditions and equipment.

Like every drilling method, hollow stem has its limitations. It isn't generally suited to competent hard rock, and depth capability varies depending on the rig, auger size and geology.

🌾 HARVEST IS HERE! 🌾

Now that harvest is in full force, all of us at Top Gear Contracting want to wish our farmers, their families, and everyone working alongside them a safe and successful harvest!

And to everyone on the roads — remember to take a breath and leave the road rage behind when you get stuck behind farm equipment. 🚜 They need to move their equipment too!

The men and women working in agriculture put in countless hours all summer, working alongside Mother Nature to get their crops off the fields, into the bins, and eventually to market — providing the food that makes its way onto all of our tables.

So, whether you're behind the wheel of a combine, hauling grain, moving equipment, or simply trying to get from A to B, slow down, be patient, give farm equipment plenty of room, and make it home safely.

Oh, you know… just installing some monitoring wells. Nothing we haven’t done a thousand times! 😉 And we love it!

So, what’s a monitoring well?

It’s a specially constructed well that allows environmental professionals to sample and monitor groundwater for things like water levels, flow, and potential contamination. 💧🌎
