🦇 Bat Season in Ontario – Part 2 of 4: Why bats don't belong in your home

One thing that surprises a lot of people is hearing us say... "we like bats." We briefly touched on this in our previous post. Bats are an important part of Ontario's ecosystem, and they do a great job controlling insects. A single bat can eat thousands of mosquitoes and other flying insects in one night.

The problem isn't the bats themselves, it's when they decide your attic or walls are a good place to live. For many homeowners, discovering a bat inside their home can be a scary and stressful experience. While one bat getting inside does not automatically mean there is a serious problem, it's still important to understand how it got in and address the entry point(s).

Over time, bat droppings (guano) can build up in an attic and create odours. Guano can also support the growth of a fungus that may cause histoplasmosis if spores become airborne and are inhaled.

It's important to remember that the concerns vary depending on the situation. A bat flying outdoors is completely different from bats living inside your home. A single bat entering your living space can be unsettling and should be handled carefully, while bats living inside a home over time can create additional health concerns due to the accumulation of droppings.

While only a small percentage of bats carry rabies, it's impossible to tell whether a bat is infected just by looking at it. That's why any direct contact with a bat should always be taken seriously and reported to your local public health unit.

Our goal is never to harm bats. We want to safely remove them from your home so they can continue doing what they do best, outside.

Because bats are mammals, their pups depend entirely on their mothers. During June and July, the young can't fly, so humane exclusions are delayed until August, when the pups are flying independently.

In Part 3, we'll show you what a proper professional bat exclusion actually involves and why a thorough inspection is the key to a long-term solution. Every home is different, and understanding how bats are gaining access is the first step in creating a safe, effective exclusion plan that works, not just a temporary fix.

Questions? We're always happy to answer them. 705-878-5353

The photo shows common bat issues we encounter:

1. Large accumulations of bat guano in attic spaces

2. Bat colony roosting in an attic

3. Bat guano contamination on the insulation of a drop ceiling

4. Bats that have fallen down wall voids (including live and deceased bats).

5. Bat guano accumulation beneath the roof and above a cathedral ceiling

6. Bat emerging from exterior wall void

Additional note for picture #4: Bats can sometimes end up inside wall voids where they are hidden from view. In this case, the homeowner heard scratching sounds coming from the wall and believed they had mice. They also noticed an unpleasant odour coming from the area. After further investigation, we opened the drywall up and discovered that bats were inside the wall void.

This is a great example of why a thorough inspection is so important. Many bat issues are hidden and cannot be resolved by simply removing the bat you see.

🦇Bat Season in Ontario - Part 1 of 4: Why are bats ending up inside homes this time of year?

Every summer we receive calls from homeowners asking the same question: "How did a bat get into my house!?"

Before we go any further, we want people to know something important. We like bats.

Bats are an important part of our ecosystem and play a huge role in controlling insects. The goal is NEVER to harm them. We want to help homeowners safely deal with bats when they end up somewhere they don't belong and this time of year, it's actually very common.

During the summer, attics can become extremely hot, especially during a heat wave like we've been experiencing this week. Bats that are roosting in an attic will often move into cooler wall spaces to escape the heat. Once they're inside the walls, they can travel through hidden spaces around plumbing, wiring, and ductwork, sometimes finding their way into your living space.

If you notice bats entering or leaving your home around dusk, this can be a sign they are using your home as a roost. Bats often return to the same locations year after year, so identifying how they are getting in is an important first step.

If a bat gets into your home, try to stay calm. Turn off the interior lights, open an exterior window (remove the screen) or open an exterior door to give the bat a chance to fly back outside. Keep children and pets away, and don't try to catch or handle it.

Recent rabies-related news in Ontario has reminded many people that although only a very small percentage of bats carry rabies, it's impossible to tell if a bat is infected just by looking at it. If direct contact with a bat has occurred, or you think contact may have occurred, it should always be taken seriously. Reach out to your local public health unit as soon as possible for guidance.

Getting the bat outside solves the immediate problem, but it doesn't solve how it got in. If bats are finding their way into your home, there's usually an entry point that should be professionally identified and addressed.

In Part 2, we'll talk about why bats don't belong inside your home and the health concerns homeowners should know about.

Have a question about bats? Leave it in the comments or reach out to us, we're always happy to help. 705-878-5353

Spider season is fast approaching!

At Bill’s Quality Pest Control, we’re always looking for ways to improve the service we provide for our customers by continuing to educate ourselves through workshops and bringing newer, better products to the communities we serve. We’ve been proudly serving the Kawartha Lakes and surrounding areas for over 25 years.

We specialize in structural pest control for homes, cottages, garages, commercial buildings, and other structures.

For the past 3 years, we’ve been using an advanced treatment product designed specifically for excellent spider control while also being highly effective against ants, mosquitoes, ticks, and a wide spectrum of other insects and arthropods for both interior and exterior applications.

Our previous treatment worked very well for spiders, but because it was oil-based, there could sometimes be concerns about staining or streaking on certain surfaces, especially windows.

This newer polymer-encapsulated synthetic pyrethroid formula bonds better to surfaces, holds up longer against weather, and dries clear which means no more oily residue, staining, or streaking. It also continues working over time by slowly releasing the active ingredient for longer-lasting protection.

The result is strong pest control with a cleaner finish for your home or business.

Stay tuned for an upcoming treatment video where we’ll show part of our application process and explain more about how these treatments work.

For more information, please call us at 705-878-1616, send us a message on Facebook or send us an email at [email protected].

As always, thank you for supporting local!
