Before the first hard freeze, give your outside taps five minutes.

1. Disconnect the garden hose.
2. Shut off the valve inside the house that feeds the outdoor tap.
3. Open the outside tap and let it drain.

Skip it, and water left in the line can freeze and split the pipe inside the wall. Most people don't find out until they turn the tap on in spring.

Have a frost-free tap? You still need to take the hose off.
