I might be disagreeing with one of the biggest names in plumbing… and that’s okay.

inspired a lot of us to get into this trade, myself included. I have a ton of respect for him and what he’s done for the industry.

But when I’m flushing a tankless or replacing a water heater, my philosophy is a little different. I’d rather do the job I was hired to do exceptionally well, earn the customer’s trust, and let future work come naturally.

Others believe every visit should include a full inspection and an opportunity to uncover additional issues that could help the homeowner and grow the business.

Neither approach is necessarily wrong. It’s just two different ways of running a service company.

So what’s your take?
Do you inspect everything while you’re there and try to book more work, or do you focus on the original call and let your workmanship bring the customer back?

👇 I want to hear from plumbers, apprentices, and homeowners alike. Let’s have a respectful debate.

Sometimes the biggest leaks start with the smallest things.

This storm collar wasn’t leaking because it was installed incorrectly—the silicone had simply deteriorated after years of exposure to the Alberta sun. From the ground, everything looked fine. Up on the roof, it was a different story.

If your vent pipes haven’t been inspected in a while, now is a good time to do it before the next heavy rain finds its way into your home.

If you’re in Lethbridge or Southern Alberta and want some peace of mind, give Soot N’ Sewer a call. We’d be happy to make sure everything is sealed up and ready for the next storm.

👇 Have you ever discovered a leak that started somewhere you never expected?

Every plumber has been there.

You pull out an old water heater, the floor is anything but level, and the new tank rocks like it’s on a boat. You look around the van, you’ve got the job to finish, and you’ve got to make a call.

In this case, I grabbed a piece of copper, hammered it flat, and used it as a shim to stabilize the tank.

Would you have done the same thing? Would you have used plastic shims? Stainless? Composite? Or are you already typing “that’s against code” from your recliner? 😂

I’m genuinely curious what other plumbers and gas fitters are doing in the field. Let’s hear it.

Step-by-step water heater install for everyone who actually wants to learn something.

And for the self-appointed master plumbers who have never posted a single install but somehow find time to critique everyone else’s… this one’s for you too. 😂

It’s amazing how many experts appear the second someone else picks up a pipe wrench.

While you’re typing your 14-paragraph dissertation on why I should’ve used your favourite fitting, I’ll be out installing the next one.

Trade guys: what’s the first thing the comment section is going to complain about? 👇

Every tradesman has been here.

You quote a job, open the wall, crawl into the attic, or dig into the ground… and suddenly you’re three hours deeper than you ever expected.

So what do you do?

💰 Bill the customer for the extra time?
🤝 Honour your quote and eat the cost?
⚖️ Somewhere in the middle?

There’s no right answer that everyone agrees on, and every business owner seems to have a different philosophy.

I’m sharing what I do in this video, but I’m genuinely curious where everyone else lands.

👇 If you’re in the trades, tell me your policy. Do you charge more or take the hit? Let’s hear the reasoning behind it.

Some days the schedule goes completely out the window.

We were in the middle of a full-day wood insert installation when an emergency call came in—a 50-gallon hot water tank had finally given up. I left Matt to keep the install moving while I raced across town to swap in a brand-new 50-gallon Bradford White tank. Then it was right back to help finish the wood insert before calling it a day.

That’s what being a local, family-run company looks like. We don’t stop because the day gets busy—we figure it out and get the job done.

Whether it’s a leaking hot water tank, a chimney project, or a wood-burning appliance install, we’re proud to serve Lethbridge and all of Southern Alberta.

Everyone talks about making more money, but nobody talks about the point where the quality starts to slip.

As a service plumber and business owner, I’ve learned that there’s a sweet spot. Enough calls to stay productive, enough time to actually serve the client well, and enough energy left to go home and be a husband and dad.

Of course, emergencies happen and some days the schedule goes completely sideways, but if I could choose my perfect day, this would be it.

I’m curious what other service plumbers think.

How many service calls do you like to run in a day before you feel like you’re just rushing from house to house? What’s your sweet spot?

👇 Drop your number and tell me why. I have a feeling this comment section is going to be divided.

After a week of rain, we’ve had call after call for water leaking down chimneys, through chase caps, and behind storm collars. The roof isn’t always the culprit!

If you’ve noticed water stains, dripping around your fireplace, or moisture coming down your chimney, don’t ignore it. A failing chase cap, storm collar, or chimney flashing can cause thousands of dollars in damage if left unchecked.

At Soot N’ Sewer, we’re proud to be Lethbridge and Southern Alberta’s go-to chimney cleaning and inspection company. Whether you need a chimney sweep, leak diagnosis, or a new chimney cap installed, we’ve got you covered.

Give us a call before a small leak turns into a major repair. We’ll get your chimney sealed up and working the way it should.
