**Hardwired smoke/CO alarms going off in the middle of the night — need advice**

This has been happening on and off since 2023. It always seems to happen at night; as far as we know, it hasn’t happened during the day.

Last night the alarms went off around 9:00 PM and again around 3:00 AM. We have alarms upstairs and downstairs, and I can never tell which one starts the alarm. This is probably the 10th or 11th time it has happened since they were hardwired and installed in 2023.

I’ve tested the batteries and they’re good.

An HVAC technician suggested it could possibly be related to moisture or condensation caused by temperature changes between day and night, but I’m not sure.

I’ve also seen people report similar issues even after replacing all of their alarms, so I’d rather understand the cause before replacing everything.

Has anyone dealt with intermittent nighttime alarms like this? What should I have checked, and could an electrician or alarm technician help identify which unit is triggering the system?

We have three small children, so getting this figured out would be a huge relief. Thanks in advance!

**Resi contractor tried jumping into commercial multi-family. The underground and rough-in work is concerning. Am I expecting too much, or is this poor workmanship?**

I work for a large residential electrical outfit in Arizona. Historically, the company has focused on single-family tract homes, but lately upper management has been pursuing multi-family projects and taking on 300-unit builds.

The challenge is that many of the crews came from residential work and were moved onto commercial-scale projects with limited commercial training. The workmanship on this project has raised some serious concerns.

A few examples:

**Riser placement:** Out of roughly 300 units, only a small number of risers appear to have landed correctly within the wall cavities.

**Plumb lines:** Many of the risers are noticeably out of plumb.

**Panel terminations:** Some conduits are entering gear and disconnects off-axis, with offsets, couplings, and other adjustments being used to make the runs work. In several cases, the locknuts don't appear to be sitting flush against the enclosures.

I've tried bringing up cleaner installation methods and basic trade practices, but the feedback hasn't always been well received.

I respect anyone working hard in the field, but at this scale, consistency, workmanship, and proper installation matter.

Am I expecting too much from a fast-paced multi-family project, or would you consider this below the standard you'd expect? How are other companies handling the transition when residential crews move into commercial-scale pipe and gear?

Am I being too paranoid?
**My husband is fixing the outlet where the stove will be hooked up.**

When he showed me the wires above it, I told him they didn’t look safe. He said he capped the wires with long wire connectors and that this should help prevent a fire hazard. The wires are black, white, red, and a fourth wire that doesn’t appear to have power.

I’m still not sure this is correct. Does this wiring need to be properly enclosed in an electrical box or otherwise secured?

Would it be best to have a licensed electrician take a look before the stove is connected?

What’s going on here? **Came out to find this green box smoking and melting!**

I just noticed this green electrical box smoking and appearing to melt. I contacted the power company, but I’m concerned they may not be taking the situation seriously.

Does anyone know what could be happening here? What’s the safest thing to do while waiting for the utility company to respond?

Close J-hook?

I've watched many youtube videos on terminating receptacles. Of
course they generally point out the obvious like placing the j-hook in
the correct direction and not to leave excess exposed copper. But many
videos do not show closing the hook.

Curious is there a hard fast rule for this or are there any arguments for or against this?

Is the hospital grade receptacle overkill for a kitchen? & ;
& ; I wanted to put the normal heavy duty 20 amp receptacles , but these were on sale and basically the same price.

**Is this a fire hazard? Ants coming in through an outlet.**

Ants have been coming in through this outlet every day, and we keep finding dead ones around it. When I shine a light into the outlet, I can see dead ants inside.

Could this create a safety or fire hazard? Should I have the outlet inspected by a qualified electrician, or is this generally something that isn’t a concern?

I’d appreciate any advice from people who have dealt with something similar. Thanks!
