Pinhole leak in corroded copper main shuts down hot water to 6-storey Richmond condo

Corrosion on a 4" copper domestic hot water main led to a pinhole leak, forcing a full shutdown of hot water to this 6-storey condo building — not a small inconvenience with that many residents affected.

Our techs drained the system down and cut out the corroded section of pipe along with the ball valve, which had corroded along with it. Repaired the piping and got everything reconnected and pressure tested.

System's back up and supplying hot water to residents again.

Corrosion on older copper mains doesn't always announce itself until it fails outright — worth keeping an eye on if your building's domestic hot water piping is getting up there in age.

Verifying separate sanitary and storm systems for a new Richmond city sewer tie-in

On a recent new construction project, the City required the General Contractor to confirm that the sanitary and storm systems were properly separated before signing off on a new sanitary tie-in — a real concern in older areas where those systems were sometimes combined.

Straight Up was brought in to identify, locate, and inspect the condition of the existing infrastructure. Our techs ran a drain inspection camera equipped with a sonde, sending out a frequency that our locator could pick up from the surface to trace the lines precisely.

Confirmed that the catch basins tie into the storm system, and that the city's sanitary sewer runs completely separate from storm — exactly what the City needed to see before approving the tie-in.

A good example of the kind of verification work that keeps new construction compliant with the city and avoids cross-connection issues down the road.

Toilet backing up into the bathtub? Here's the fix.

When this toilet in a house in North Vancouver was flushed, instead of draining normally it backed up into the bathtub instead — a sign of a clog further down the line.

Our tech accessed the line through a clean-out and snaked it, clearing the blockage and getting the drain flowing properly again.

If flushing one fixture causes water to show up in another, don't ignore it — it usually means a clog is building up somewhere in the shared line.

Sewer backup solved in Abbotsford
Had a call today where a clogged sewer line was backing up into a house through the water heater drain pan. Our tech pulled the toilet and snaked the line to clear it. Ran a camera down after to check the pipe and found the culprit: a v**e had gotten flushed and lodged in there, with balled up toilet paper packed in behind it further down.
Cleared it all out and ran the camera through the rest of the line to make sure it was fully clear. Good reminder: toilets aren't for anything but toilet paper. Vapes, wipes, anything else can cause a backup like this.

Annual backflow testing in Surrey
Wrapped up annual backflow testing on a commercial building in Surrey this week. It's a requirement to have backflow devices tested annually to make sure they're still doing their job, keeping contaminated water from ever getting back into the clean supply.
Our tech went through each device, tested them one by one, and filed the results with the city. If a device fails, we can usually repair it on the spot and retest before moving on.

Garburator removal and repipe in Burnaby
Had a job in Burnaby where a garburator had failed and was leaking under the sink. Our tech removed it and repiped the 2 compartment sink so everything drains properly without it.
Bonus with the garburator gone: fewer clogs down the road since food scraps aren't going down that drain anymore.

Parkade leak traced to failed toilet seal in Richmond
Noticed a leak coming through the parkade ceiling in this Richmond apartment complex, with a noticeable blue stain giving it away. Our tech traced it up to the drain pipe pe*******on hole for a toilet in the unit above.
Turned out the wax seal on that toilet had failed, leaking water down through the pe*******on without the owner upstairs even knowing. The blue stain was from a cleaning tab in the toilet tank, which made the source easy to confirm once we found it.
Resealed the toilet and stopped the leak at the source.
Good example of how a small hidden leak upstairs can show up as a big stain somewhere else entirely. If you're dealing with a mystery leak, we can help track it down.

A homeowner's perimeter storm drain in Maple Ridge had a buildup of dirt and debris causing drainage issues around the property. Our team used a drain camera to inspect the full line and pinpoint exactly where the blockage was.

From there, we ran a flex shaft (pipe descaler) through the line to clear out the buildup and restore proper flow. With heavy rain season around the corner, a clear storm drain means no water pooling around your foundation.
