Lake Country Garden Club announces new demonstration garden at Swalwell Park
Lake Country, BC — The Lake Country Garden Club is excited to announce the development of a new Demonstration Garden in partnership with the District of Lake Country. Located in the southeast corner of Swalwell Park, the garden will become a year-round public destination for learning, gathering and celebrating the beauty and resilience of sustainable gardening.
The Demonstration Garden is designed as a “living classroom” that showcases ecologically responsible gardening practices including water-wise planting, FireSmart landscaping, soil-building techniques, edible gardens, and native and pollinator-supporting plants. The space will feature signage, pathways, gathering areas and hands-on opportunities for visitors to learn and participate.
Plans for the Demonstration Garden have been in the works for over a year, with a dedicated task force of Garden Club volunteers ironing out design details, making connections with landscapers and gardeners and envisioning a flourishing future in the heart of Lake Country. “This project aligns with our community values of sustainability, education and beautification, and we are excited to see it come to life,” said District of Lake Country Mayor Blair Ireland. The District of Lake Country has generously provided the location, while the Lake Country Garden Club has taken responsibility to fund, build and maintain the garden for the community.
“This garden is the Garden Club’s gift to our community,” said Amanda Armstrong, task force team lead from the Lake Country Garden Club. “It will be a place where people of all ages can explore, learn and connect with nature. By demonstrating practical, climate-resilient gardening approaches, we hope to inspire home gardeners and create a space where community grows — literally and figuratively.”
Designed by local landscape architecture firms The Field Room and MK Design Group, the Demonstration Garden project will be built in phases over three years. Early site preparation is already underway. Once complete, the garden will host workshops, guided tours, school programs, seasonal events and opportunities for residents to help maintain, plant and contribute to the space.
The project will be funded through a combination of grants, cash donations and in-kind contributions from local businesses and community partners. Donations are gratefully accepted and will directly support plants, soil, hardscaping, signage and construction materials.
The community is invited to follow along as the garden takes shape and to get involved in many ways — volunteering, donating, attending events, sharing seeds and celebrating the transformation of the site from bare ground to a thriving community space.
