At 505 Railway, a small extensive green roof sits on the edge of Vancouver's working waterfront. It doesn't need to be big to do its job.

It retains rainwater and eases the load on urban infrastructure, insulates the building naturally, helps keep it cooler in summer, and brings a patch of habitat to an industrial stretch of the city.

Even in small doses, green space is consistently linked to lower stress and better wellbeing. Every roof that works this way adds up.

A successful landscape project is about a lot more than choosing plants and drawing a beautiful plan.

In BC, a landscape architect's role runs from first sketch to final site: inventory and analysis, concept design, detailed design, tender and RFP, and contract administration. Think of a landscape architect as the thread connecting each phase of the project, which is exactly why we stay on site through construction, not just at the finish line.

Good design always starts with what's already there.

The Harrison River runs right by this site, and it shaped nearly every decision in this design. The planting plan follows the same curvature as the water, colour shifting through the beds the way current moves through a channel. Reds echo the salmon that run upstream here every year. Yellows nod to the region's gold rush history. Boulders do double duty as both art piece and seating. It's what happens when design responds to place.

Wrapping up our drought-tolerant series with the backbone of any low-water landscape: trees.

A well-chosen tree does the heavy lifting, deep roots, real shade, and structure that holds up through dry Okanagan summers for decades. Here are three that belong in a water-wise landscape.

As with the rest of this series, give new trees consistent water through establishment. It's the investment that pays off once those root systems mature.

Texture does more work in a landscape than people give it credit for. It's the contrast between a soft petal and a sharp leaf edge, and it's just as much about the hard materials, stone, pavers, gravel, that ground a space. Water moving over stone is one of the clearest examples: soft against hard, moving against still.

Back for part two of our drought-tolerant planting series, this time with shrubs.

The right shrub does more than fill space, it holds structure through dry Okanagan summers with far less water than a traditional landscape. Here are three that earn their place, and one was part our our ‘Deer Tolerant’ Series if you’re looking for a ‘win-win’.

Remember, even drought-tolerant shrubs need consistent water while they establish. Give them a season or two to build the root systems that make them low-maintenance for years to come.

There's a stretch in every season where the growing world starts to shift, and you can feel it if you're paying attention. That's a good reminder of why we do this work in the first place.

Plants this time of year are doing something we spend a lot of our design time chasing: colour combinations that feel completely effortless. It's not just the blooms either, foliage carries just as much colour. Gold against deep green, a flash of purple next to soft green leaves, nothing forced about any of it.
