🚪 YOUR DOOR MAY NEED A CHIRO-STYLE ADJUSTMENT? WHAT?
Ever go to the chiropractor because your ankle hurts… and they start working on your hip or back?

Why?

Because everything is connected.

Doors are a lot like that.
You call us because:

🔴 The lock is hard to turn.
🔴 The door won’t latch.
🔴 You have to pull on the handle to lock it.
🔴 The door rubs or drags.
🔴 The closer slams the door — or won’t close it completely.

It’s easy to assume the part giving you trouble must be the problem.

But not necessarily.

A lock that won’t latch could actually be caused by the door being out of alignment.

A door that won’t close properly could involve the hinges, frame, closer, weatherstripping or threshold.

And replacing the lock won’t fix a door that’s sagging.

Doors are a system.
The frame, hinges, closer, lock, latch, strike, threshold and weatherstripping all have to work together.

That’s why at Screwy Louie’s, we don’t just look at what hurts.

We look at what’s causing it.

You could say we’re a little like chiropractors for doors. 😄

Before replacing hardware that may not actually be the problem, let us diagnose the whole door. It's our profession.

🪟 DUAL PANE vs. TRIPLE PANE — WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

Got a window that’s foggy between the panes, cracked, or just not performing like it used to?
You may not need a whole new window.

A sealed unit is the glass portion of your window, made with two or three panes of glass sealed together with insulated spaces between them.

🔹 DUAL PANE
Two panes + one insulated space. A practical, cost-effective option for many existing windows.

🔹 TRIPLE PANE
Three panes + two insulated spaces. It can provide better thermal performance, warmer interior glass surfaces and improved comfort — especially valuable in our Northern climate.

☁️ Fogging between the panes?

That’s often a sign the seal has failed. Because the moisture is trapped inside, cleaning the glass won’t solve the problem.

The good news?
You may only need to replace the sealed unit — not the entire window.

At Screwy Louie’s Locks & Glass, we build custom dual- and triple-pane sealed units right in our shop — ready in 24 hours.

Cracked glass.
Failed seal.
Foggy window.
We’ll help you figure out what you actually need.
Sometimes the window doesn’t need replacing. It just needs the right glass.

🔑 AN EMPLOYEE LEAVES — BUT THEIR KEY DOESN’T COME BACK.
Now what?
Do you need to change every lock?

Don’t panic — but don’t ignore it either.

The real question is: Who may still have access to your building?

Start by figuring out:

• What doors does the missing key open?
• Is it a standard key or a master key?
• Does it access inventory, equipment or sensitive areas?
• Could another copy have been made?

From there, you have options — and replacing every lock usually isn’t the first one.

🔴 Rekey the affected locks
We can change the locks so the old key no longer works, usually without replacing the hardware.

🔴 Review your master key system
If the key opened multiple doors, we can determine exactly which areas may be affected.

🔴 Improve key control
If nobody is quite sure how many keys are floating around anymore, a restricted key system can give you much better control over duplication.

🔴 Consider keyless access
Employee leaves? Remove their individual credential instead of chasing down a key.

And this isn’t necessarily about distrust.
Keys get lost, forgotten, copied and left on personal key rings.

Good security simply means knowing who has access.
Sometimes one missing key means rekeying one door. Sometimes it reveals a bigger key-control problem.

Not sure what makes sense for your building?
Give Screwy Louie’s a call.
We’ll help you understand your options so you can decide what level of security makes sense for your business.

🪨 If you’ve GOT A ROCK CHIP- HERE ARE IMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW.
Several things can affect compromised glass, including:
• Hot and cold temperature changes
• Defrost and sudden heating or cooling
• The size, depth, type and location of the chip
• Vehicle vibration, movement and body flex
• Rough roads and potholes
• Dark/tinted areas of glass that absorb more heat
• Existing stresses or damage within the windshield
• The repair process itself—as some chips require an access point to be carefully opened so resin can properly pe*****te the damaged area
Even when everything is done correctly, an existing chip can sometimes spread because we’re repairing glass that has already been weakened—not undamaged glass.
So why repair it?
Because repairing a rock chip as soon as possible gives you the best chance of stabilizing the damage before it becomes a larger crack and requires windshield replacement.
See a chip? Don’t wait. Bring it in and let us take a look.

Why is my door getting harder to close or lock? A door that suddenly needs an extra push, pull or lift to latch is usually telling you something has shifted or worn.

The problem isn’t always the lock.
It could be the door alignment, hinges, frame, closer, threshold or strike.
You may notice the door rubbing, the latch not lining up, the closer slamming, daylight around the frame or the lock becoming difficult to operate.

Don't wait until the door quits.

A simple adjustment today can help prevent damaged hardware, an unsecured door or a more expensive repair later.

Other times, worn or damaged components simply just need to be replaced.

Have it looked at while it's still a maintenance problem instead of an emergency.

Screwy Louie’s can inspect the complete door system, identify the actual cause and determine whether you need an adjustment, new hardware or door replacement.

Which is your situation?
You’ve lost a key.
An employee has left.
A tenant moved out.
Or maybe you’ve bought a building and have absolutely no idea how many copies of the keys are floating around.

So now what?

Do you need new locks—or can you simply have the existing locks rekeyed?

It’s one of the most common questions we get, and the good news is that you may not need to replace your locks at all but REKEY instead.

WHAT DOES REKEYING A LOCK MEAN?

When we rekey a lock, we change the internal components so that the old key will no longer operate it.

A new key is then made to work with the existing lock.

The lock stays on the door.

What changes is who can open it.

This can be a practical solution when your existing hardware is still in good condition but you need to regain control over access.

WHEN SHOULD YOU REKEY?

Rekeying may make sense when:

• A key has been lost or stolen
• An employee leaves and doesn’t return their key
• A tenant moves out
• You purchase a new home or commercial property
• You don’t know who has copies of the existing keys
• You want several locks to operate from the same key
• You want to reorganize the keying of a building

For businesses and property managers, rekeying can also be part of creating a better key-control system.

WHEN SHOULD YOU REPLACE THE LOCK INSTEAD?

Sometimes the hardware itself is the problem.

If the lock is worn, damaged, unreliable or no longer suitable for the security needs of the building, replacement may be the better investment.

This can also be a good opportunity to upgrade your hardware or consider other access options.

The important thing is that changing who has access and replacing the hardware are two different decisions. You don't necessarily need to do both.

SO--DON'T SPEND MONEY WHERE YOU DON'T HAVE TO

We'd rather help you determine what you actually need than replace perfectly good hardware unnecessarily.

As Screwy Louie's Locks & Glass, we can look at your existing locks, talk through who needs access and help you determine the most practical solution.

🔐 CARRYING THE TRADE INTO THE NEXT GENERATION

In this picture you see our son, Judah Schellenberg is continuing his journey toward becoming a Journeyperson Locksmith.

But his education in this trade started long before the classroom.

For the past 10 years, he's been standing beside his Dad — learning, working, watching, asking questions and getting his hands dirty alongside the man, the myth, the legend… Screwy Louie himself! 😄🔐

Something many people may not realize is that locksmithing is a skilled trade in Alberta — and becoming a Journeyperson Locksmith takes a significant amount of education and hands-on training.

To complete the apprenticeship, a locksmith apprentice works through:

🔑 3 years of apprenticeship training
🔑 4,680 hours of hands-on, on-the-job training
🔑 24 weeks of technical classroom education
🔑 3 levels of apprenticeship training
🔑 Theory examinations along the way
🔑 Documented competency in the skills of the trade

Those thousands of hours are spent learning much more than how to cut keys.

Locksmithing involves understanding locks and door hardware, master key systems, access control, troubleshooting, installation, repair, security and the responsibility that comes with being trusted with people's homes, businesses and property.

For us, though, this is about more than the hours and the certificate.

When Screwy Louie's began, we were building a business to provide for our family and serve the people around us. We didn't know exactly what it would become all these years later.

And now, after 10 years of working beside his dad, we get to watch our son take everything he's learned through those years of hands-on experience and continue building on it through his formal apprenticeship education.

We're proud of you, son.
Keep learning.
Keep working hard.
